The step Wolves will ‘likely’ take with Jorgen Strand Larsen now the transfer window has closed

Wolves are pretty furious with how transfer deadline day – and the summer in general – went, but keeping Jorgen Strand Larsen was a major positive.

Strand Larsen became the subject of an intense pursuit by Newcastle with around a week to go before the window closed.

Newcastle made two bids for Jorgen Strand Larsen, one at £50 million and one at £55 million.

There was talk of a third bid being prepared, but Wolves’ firm stance over the player meant it never came. Wolves were adamant they weren’t selling.

Wolves reiterated this stance to Strand Larsen on deadline day, and the player accepted it.

Strand Larsen’s conduct over the past couple of weeks has been superb, and Wolves will now look to take an important step with him, even now that the window has closed.

Several players at various clubs have not acted in a particularly professional manner this summer.

And unfortunately, such behaviour has actually managed to get them what they want, in a reminder that players really do hold so much power.

But Strand Larsen has continued to train and play for Wolves even with everything going on, and also accepted Wolves’ ultimate stance with good grace.

There’s a lot to be said for that, and Wolves are ready to try and reward the Norwegian.

In a comment piece this morning in the E&S, journalist Liam Keen spoke of Wolves finding a way to keep Strand Larsen happy and playing.

He said: “The positives saw Wolves stand their ground and keep Larsen, despite rejecting two bids from Newcastle and the player making it clear he wanted the move.

“That decision should be commended and they must now find a way to keep the forward happy and playing – which will likely include a new contract on an increased salary.”

Newcastle unlikely to come back in for Strand Larsen

The hope is that Strand Larsen will now be able to get back to doing what he does best, which is scoring goals.

It can’t have been an easy past few weeks for him, and right now he’s probably wondering what might have been. It is widely acknowledged that he was keen to make the move.

But fans will back him to get his head down and kick on, given how he has conducted himself throughout the whole situation.

Appearances – 41
Minutes played – 2998
Goals – 16
Assists – 5

He deserves credit for accepting Wolves’ decision with good grace, especially as journalist Craig Hope has said he would be ‘surprised’ if Newcastle now made a future move for the Norwegian, given they’ve signed Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade.

Hopefully, Strand Larsen would be willing to agree to fresh terms at Wolves, who are right to be looking to reward their number nine.

But one would not be surprised if any new contract included a relegation release clause.
