The potential shirt numbers Matheus Nunes could wear for Wolves

Wolves are set to confirm the signing of Matheus Nunes today.

It has been a long pursuit, but the club have finally agreed a fee with Sporting CP and personal terms with the player.

The star will pen a long-term contract at the club and become the third new signing of the window after Nathan Collins and Goncalo Guedes.

Fans are hugely excited about seeing the maestro in Wolves colours.

By many accounts, the club have pulled off an amazing deal here.

Nunes had been very coveted after a strong past couple of seasons.

Earlier this year, he came in for high praise from Pep Guardiola, who suggested he was one of the best midfielders in the world at that moment.

The player is expected to have his medical today, an announcement should arrival after.

Shirt numbers available to Matheus Nunes at Wolves

It will be interesting to see which shirt number Nunes will wear when he completes his move.

At Sporting, he has worn the number 8 shirt. Obviously he can’t wear that at Wolves while Ruben Neves is still around.

Currently the only numbers between 1-10 that are free are 2 and 5.

The number 2 shirt does not feel particularly likely for Nunes. It is currently vacant after right-back Ki-Jana Hoever left the club to join PSV Eindhoven on loan.

Perhaps more likely would be number 5, which was last worn by Fernando Marcal. The Brazilian left the club earlier this summer when his contract expired.

Number 5 is not massively common for midfielders. But perhaps Nunes is feeling like channelling Zinedine Zidane, who famously wore that number for Real Madrid.

It is worth noting that the number 6 shirt could soon be freed up at Molineux.

Bruno Jordao, 23, is being linked with a loan move to Santa Clara, and so Nunes may like to take that number. We have already seen Goncalo Guedes take Fabio Silva’s number 17 shirt, so it’s not like loan players’ shirts are off limits.

The number 12 shirt is free, while Conor Coady’s 16 is now up for grabs after he departed for Everton.

The England international is likely to turn his move permanent next year, with Everton holding an option to buy.

Nunes also has 21, 26, 27, 29 and 30 available to him.

Ultimately, most Wolves fans won’t be too pressed about which number he selects. The majority are just thrilled the club have managed to get him in.
