‘The absolute audacity’… Some Wolves fans are turning on Matheus Cunha after fresh admission

It is expected that Matheus Cunha will leave Wolves in the summer – but some fans are not happy with some new comments he’s made regarding his future.

On February 1, Cunha signed a new contract at Wolves following a lot of speculation.

That had been mooted weeks prior, but there was silence for a weeks before he finally put pen to paper after scoring in the win over Aston Villa.

It was feared by fans that Cunha was going to leave mid-season, with a number of clubs keen. Nottingham Forest were considering a move for Cunha, among others.

But in the end he stayed put, and agreed to fresh terms at Molineux.

And Cunha’s new contract included a £62.5 million release clause.

It’s expected another club will trigger that clause, and that Cunha will be on his way. And the player has now made some new comments to suggest he will indeed be on his way.

Cunha has been speaking about his future, and admitted he is looking to take the next step.

He said: “I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it.

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step.

“I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

Cunha did also express his gratitude to Wolves, saying: “Sometimes all we want in life is affection,” Cunha says. People think we have everything, but we’re human beings, too. We need a bit of understanding – we have our difficulties. Wolves gave me that joy back. The fans [have given] me a lot. The status I have today, the player I am now and the happiness I’m feeling, it’s because of them. I’m really grateful to Wolves.”

Wolves fans are not happy with Cunha

On social media, fans have been reacting to Cunha’s comments about moving on.

And it’s safe to say a lot have now turned on him, feeling the suggestions to be disrespectful and tone-deaf.

@kevtheman10 said: “No doubt the fans knew that Cunha would want to leave the club eventually. However with his comments earlier today, it just shows the wrong way to go about it. Especially as there are 9 games still left to go and Wolves not safe yet.”

@AdzField added: “You know the more I think of it the more I don’t want to see Cunha in a Wolves shirt again. The absolute audacity to sign a new contract for a massive wage increase & low release clause you fought for to then turn round 2 months later & publicly say you’re ready to leave…”

@adamwolves93 said: “Our fans best not vote Cunha for player and/or goal of the season. Agbadou or J.Gomes gets my player vote, And Bellegarde vs forest for goal.”

No need from Cunha

The frustrations around what Cunha has said are understandable.

While he has absolutely carried Wolves at times this season, and will ultimately be a major reason for the club staying in the Premier League, it is not the best look to be talking like this.

The job isn’t finished yet, and it is just a little tone-deaf to be making suggestions about the future.

Everyone understands that there’s a strong possibility he’ll leave this summer, and fair enough that he wants to compete for trophies.

It’s just questionable that he needs to say these things publicly, especially after letting Wolves down by getting a second ban of the season recently.
