Matheus Cunha returned to goalscoring form for Wolves against Aston Villa – and then signed a new contract at the club.
It is something that’s been in the pipeline for a while. But fans had recently been growing concerned that it was no longer on the table.
A couple of weeks ago it was suggested Cunha and his agent were stalling over a new contract at Wolves, with transfer interest in the player quite high.
Cunha then turned in poor performances against Chelsea and Arsenal, leading some to question if his head had been turned.
But against Villa, Cunha was much better, and there could be no questioning his desire and work rate. And in injury-time, he made sure of the win for Wolves with a brilliant goal to make it 2-0.
Cunha’s celebration against Aston Villa suggested he’d be staying at the club and just hours later, a new contract was confirmed – and now the player has been speaking about his decision.
Matheus Cunha says ‘this is the moment to keep fighting’ as he signs new Wolves contract

Cunha has had a terrific season again for Wolves so far.
Some of the performances he’s put in have been fantastic, and Wolves would likely be in the relegation zone and possibly cut adrift right now had it not been for his contributions.
He’s hugely important to Wolves, and news of his new contract is amazing for all concerned at the club.
Cunha has been speaking about his decision to extend, and reading between the lines, it does sound as though there was potential for him to leave in this window.
But Cunha says that ‘this is the moment to keep fighting’, which Wolves fans will surely love.
Seemingly there was potential for Cunha to leave this month. But that won’t be happening now, and the final 31 words the Brazilian said will surely go down very well with the fans.
He told the club: “I feel happy because it was my heart to take this decision. It was more than everything, it was my passion. I love to be here. Of course, everyone tries and wants something more for their career, for their future. But I really feel this is the moment to keep fighting. It’s the moment to show everyone what you have, and what love you want to give back.”
Cunha contract a major boost for Wolves
So Cunha has finally signed on the dotted line and that will put an end to the speculation in this transfer window. If only it could have happened sooner.
It remains to be seen if there is some kind of release clause in that contract. One would imagine there’s a very good chance there is.

Appearances – 80 |
Goals – 27 |
Assists – 13 |
There will surely be a relegation release clause in the event Wolves get relegated. Or at least, there will be a gentleman’s agreement for him to leave for a reasonable fee.
But for now, this is very positive news for Wolves and hopefully, Cunha can now enter into another purple patch after scoring his first goal of 2025 on Saturday.
