Sunderland ready to rival Wolves for £26m player, and they might have a trump card

The 2025 summer transfer window has exhausted a lot of Wolves fans so far – and the frustrating updates don’t stop coming.

Fans are desperately hoping to see Wolves react in these last few weeks before the new Premier League season starts.

So far, just two new faces have arrived in Fer Lopez and Jhon Arias, with the latter having not even joined up with the squad yet.

But a host of exits have been sanctioned.

Wolves continue to be linked with lots of players though, and fans hope that there will soon be some breakthroughs.

One player Wolves have been tracking is Amine Adli.

Earlier this week it was suggested Wolves had even made a concrete offer for Adli, but now there’s word of interest from Sunderland.

Wolves were stung last week when Atletico Madrid signed Marc Pubill, when the defender had looked on course to come to Molineux.

There was big frustration that Wolves let him slip, given the dire need for a Nelson Semedo replacement at the moment.

And now, Wolves could be in danger of missing out on another target.

Because journalist Julien Laurens, who first reported Wolves’ interest in Adli, has brought an update to say that Sunderland are now in the mix.

He wrote this evening on X: “Sunderland also going for Amine Adli now and competing with Wolves’ offer for the Bayer Leverkusen forward.

“Bayer are not against letting him go and his priority is to come to England.

“Sunderland will finalise Xhaka’s deal first and then move for his former teammate Adli.”

Wolves were thought to be leading the race for Adli though, so there is still hope of a move to Molineux despite Sunderland’s arrival on the scene.

Wolves now up against it to sign Adli

It’s one thing after another at the moment with Wolves in the transfer market, and news of Sunderland joining the race for Adli is concerning.

Because Sunderland and Bayer Leverkusen have just been in talks over Granit Xhaka, who will move to the Stadium of Light.

That successful negotiation means there’s a relationship there between the clubs, and it could be key in bringing a deal for Adli to fruition.

Not to mention the notion that Adli – who has 23 goals and 17 assists in 142 games for Bayer Leverkusen – might fancy following Xhaka to Sunderland. That could be a genuine trump card here for Sunderland in their pursuit of Adli.

Sunderland have shown real ambition this summer as they seek to boost their survival hopes, and many Wolves fans will not hold their breath over beating the Black Cats to the Moroccan.
