Striker Gary O’Neil wanted at Wolves could now seal £85m transfer to Arsenal or Liverpool this summer

Wolves will be looking to strengthen this summer with a new striker likely to be on the agenda – but there is one previous target who’ll certainly not be heading to Molineux.

Fans have been delighted at how things have gone in recent weeks.

Wolves lost to Manchester City on Friday, which saw the club’s winning streak finally ended.

Wolves won six straight matches in the top-flight, and gave City a good game at the Etihad Stadium, losing narrowly by just a single goal in the end.

Fans now want to see Vitor Pereira backed in the transfer window.

It will be important for Wolves to be bullish, if they are to push on and reach the next level.

In recent times, Wolves have missed out on targets due to perhaps not being forceful enough – and Hugo Ekitike was one such player.

And now, Wolves could come up against him next season.

Ekitike was a player Wolves looked at in January 2024, back when Gary O’Neil was in charge.

The Frenchman had barely played for Paris Saint-Germain, and Wanderers were apparently keen to get him in to provide a bit more depth.

As we all saw, Wolves then got hit by an injury crisis, with Matheus Cunha, Hwang Hee-chan and Pedro Neto all picking up hamstring issues.

A move did not materialise, and Ekitike joined Eintracht Frankfurt shortly after word of Wolves’ interest – and he’s been a real hit in Germany.

Ekitike has scored 22 goals and made 11 assists in 46 matches this term, and he is now being eyed up by top Premier League clubs.

According to top German journalist Christian Falk, Ekitike could now make a move to the Premier League this summer, with both Arsenal and Liverpool keen.

Eintracht want £85 million for the star, and Falk adds that the bosses at Eintracht assume that he will go.

Another transfer regret for Wolves

Wolves really could have done with another striker coming in in January 2024, with the squad a little light and the potential for injuries there.

Ekitike joined Eintracht on an initial loan, with the German club then buying him permanently for around £14 million.

Ekitike could now sell for six times that figure, and it is yet another case of a player not joining Wolves and then flourishing.

We’ve seen it several times now with the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Viktor Gyokeres, who were both heavily linked with Wolves before going on to become top players.

Fans will hope that Fosun act with a bit more force this summer – hopefully, Pereira will play a part in player recruitment and help the club to land some big talents.
