Shock new January claim regarding Fer Lopez amid Spaniard’s tricky start at Wolves

It’s safe to say it hasn’t been an easy start for Fer Lopez at Wolves – and now he is the subject of a surprise transfer claim.

Fer Lopez was the very first signing of the 2025 summer window for Wolves.

He joined the club from Spanish side Celta Vigo, with the Old Gold forking out close to £20 million.

That was a lot to pay for a young player who hadn’t actually made many first-team appearances for Celta.

Does Fer Lopez deserve more minutes for Wolves?

But there was optimism from Wolves that Lopez could develop into a top player. However, it has been a struggle for him so far.

Lopez is one of the least used players at Wolves this season, and he just simply couldn’t convince Vitor Pereira to play him while the Portuguese was in charge.

He also didn’t get any minutes in Rob Edwards’ first game against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

And now, as has been the case with a couple of other new signings, Lopez could be heading for an early exit.

Many fans have been frustrated by Lopez’s start to life at Wolves.

The frustrations haven’t so much been directed at him, but rather Pereira who so often overlooked him.

Wolves have been crying out for some creativity this season and for many, Lopez has felt like the potential solution.

There have been flashes of quality. But he has also struggled at times with the pace and physicality of the league.

Today, a surprising claim has emerged about Lopez – and it comes from the Tenías Que Haber Tirado podcast, which covers all things Celta Vigo.

On Tuesday afternoon, they said on X that Celta are now considering a swoop for Lopez following his early struggles at Wolves.

They even say that they are holding talks with Wolves over a potential January loan move.

But it could be a complicated one, because Celta need to free up a spot in their squad.

The claim comes after two other new signings were also linked with early exits from Molineux. It was reported that Jhon Arias is wanted by Flamengo amongst others.

And Tolu Arokodare was also linked with Fenerbahce.

More embarrassment for Wolves as Lopez loan touted

If Lopez left Wolves on loan in January then that would mean even more embarrassment for Wolves.

Lopez did not come cheap, so to potentially see him leave in order to go and further his development would be a poor look.

It would also be yet another bad reflection on Vitor Pereira and Jeff Shi, who both played big roles in Wolves’ summer recruitment.

There was real hype when Fer Lopez first signed for Wolves

“I have seen some of the best players in the world play football. I have never seen a footballer like him. He was literally incredible. From the first day, I knew he was going to be a superstar.”

– Paul Grainger, who mentored Fer Lopez in 2018

Domenico Teti did also join Wolves just days before the signing of Lopez was announced, but the likelihood is that most of the groundwork had already been done on Lopez beforehand.

There are of course still around five weeks to go until the January transfer window opens.

So we will see how often Rob Edwards will turn to Lopez. If there isn’t much change, then this will surely have legs.
