Sam Johnstone’s next move after Wolves may have just become clearer as David Ornstein shares development

A lot of eyes are on Sam Johnstone with the Wolves goalkeeper expected to leave the club soon.

Sam Johnstone is currently with the Wolves squad, and went to the training camp in Portugal.

But there has been speculation about his future for weeks, after his first season at Molineux didn’t go to plan.

Johnstone arrived at Wolves in a £10 million deal from Crystal Palace and initially started games for Wanderers.

But after some brief chopping and changing with him and Jose Sa, it was the Portuguese who played the majority of games in the second half of the season.

It was reported at the start of the summer that Johnstone was ready to leave Wolves after failing to nail down a regular starting spot.

It’s still expected that he’ll get a move away, and a development this morning may suggest where he could be headed.

Earlier this summer, it was claimed that Sunderland were showing interest in Johnstone.

The Black Cats are looking to make a real go of staying up in 2025/26 and so far, have shown impressive ambition in the transfer window.

This morning though, there’s been a development at the Stadium of Light – and it appears they are signing another goalkeeper.

David Ornstein reports: “Sunderland reach agreement with NEC Nijmegen to sign Robin Roefs as new No1 goalkeeper.

“Deal for 22yo Netherlands U21 international €10.5m + €3m add-ons & sell-on to #NECNijmegen. Medical today before joining #SAFC on 5yr contract.”

Another club who have been showing interest in Johnstone is Burnley, who are also looking to survive after coming up from the Championship.

Given the activity at Sunderland, Burnley now look likely to be Johnstone’s next club.

James Trafford exit opens door for Johnstone at Burnley

And in other news, which could be a catalyst for Johnstone to head to Lancashire, James Trafford has left Turf Moor and returned to Manchester City.

City sold Trafford to Burnley two years ago, and have now swooped to bring him back in a £27 million deal.

It was reported a few days ago that Burnley were closing in on Johnstone, and given there now appears to be little chance of a swoop from Sunderland, few would bet against the move from happening.

It remains to be seen what kind of fee Burnley could pay.

But it would be the right move from Wolves to sanction a permanent exit.

Unfortunately it just hasn’t worked out, and too much money was spent on him for him to barely play, with Sa the clear number one now for Vitor Pereira.
