Rob Edwards outlines to Jamie Carragher how Wolves may approach the January transfer window

Wolves need reinforcements in January and yesterday Rob Edwards spoke about the club’s potential approach to the next transfer window.

Wolves have had a dismal season so far, and that has largely been because the recruitment in the summer was so poor.

The Old Gold watched a number of key players leave the club, including game-changers like Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri.

And then, the club failed to bring in any players who had experience of the Premier League.

While not essential, Wolves would surely have benefitted from bringing in a couple of proven players this time around.

Jeff Shi famously said Wolves had a good window, but the vast majority of fans disagree and clearly, Wolves’ Premier League points tally says otherwise.

Now, Wolves are facing a huge January to potentially try and rectify the situation and add some quality players.

But it has previously been suggested Wolves’ approach isn’t set in stone yet. Today though, Edwards provided some clarity.

Wolves need a new midfielder, and also a player to play in the number 10 positions and/or out wide, depending on the system.

But Wolves are potentially facing a real issue in terms of actually attracting players in the next window.

At the moment, Wolves are rock bottom of the Premier League table.

Ahead of today’s game against Aston Villa, Edwards was asked when he’d had conversations with the owners about January.

And he confirmed recent theories, by saying Wolves’ approach will likely be dictated by their league position.

He told Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports: “Right now my focus has got to be the training and the games.

“In the background there’s a lot of work going on as well. But let’s be really honest about this as well, I suppose it depends on how we do over this next month or so, as to where we can go in the market

“We need to focus on the football, and try and get some results.”

January could be a slog for Wolves

It was interesting to hear Edwards speak about January, and it seems clear now that the approach will be dictated by results and Wolves’ position in the Premier League.

That said, even if Wolves somehow manage to close the gap to the teams just above them by the time the January window rolls around, it will likely still be a real challenge to sign top players.

Thanks to Fosun, Wolves are in a real mess. And the reality is that top players who can make a difference now aren’t going to be attracted by the current project.

And if the gap actually gets even bigger than what it is now, then it looks certain that Wolves will behave with the Championship in mind.
