Rob Edwards confirms Wolves’ spending power in January as Fosun plans laid bare

With the January transfer window officially open, plenty of questions are going to be asked of Wolves head coach Rob Edwards, but his latest answer reveals a continuing problem at the club.

Over the last few seasons, the Old Gold have consistently sold their best players, replacing them with inferior stars, and that has ultimately landed them in hot water.

Relegation looks all but confirmed, but at Wolves, there is no point in giving up with plenty of football to play.

However, the situation makes the January window difficult. With the Wanderers rooted in 20th place, it could be a difficult project to sell to Premier League quality players, a calibre which Edwards desperately needs.

Wolves have plenty of work to do this month, but those efforts will not be easy after what Rob Edwards has just said.

Wolves’ ability in the January window has been laid bare by head coach Rob Edwards as he looks to add more quality to his squad.

The poor recruitment in the summer transfer window has left the Wanderers needing to bring in more players as they seek to make something out of nothing in the second half of the season.

Speaking at his pre-West Ham press conference, Rob Edwards has now clarified the spending power at his disposal, confirming that Wolves may need to sell players to buy.

“We might have to do that. It depends on what we want to try and bring in as well. There are different ways of doing that, whether it’s buying or whether it’s loaning,” Edwards says.

“Of course, January can be quite difficult anyway. With the situation that we’re in, we’ve got to be clever with who we’re bringing in.

“We want to bring in the people who want to be here and feel that they can really affect it, and we feel can affect it as well. But if we’re going to spend some money, it might be that we have to generate some of that as well.”

Players such as Jose Sa and Hwang Hee-chan have been tipped to leave Wolves in January, but more prominent figures such as Joao Gomes and Jorgen Strand Larsen could join them.

Manchester United still hold interest in Gomes and are weighing up whether to make their move.

Additionally, Jorgen Strand Larsen is of interest to fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

The same Fosun cycle continues to happen

The lack of investment at Wolves has been their downfall over the last few years. The Old Gold were once battling for European places, and now their Premier League status is in danger.

Constantly selling off your top stars and trying to replicate success with unproven talents that you can later sell for profit has not been sustainable for Fosun, and their luck has finally run dry.

Particularly when the person who used to be in charge of those decisions once admitted he was not an ‘expert’ in that field.

With Nathan Shi at the helm, the hope will be that history does not repeat itself, and it seems that Matt Jackson and others are set to be given a more prominent role in transfers.
