‘Really close’… £15m Wolves star is about to leave Molineux as free agent

Jonny Castro Otto is said to be on the verge of joining Greek side PAOK, with the Wolves player set to make the move as a free agent.

Jonny has been an expected departure this month, after he was banished from the first-team picture before Christmas.

The Spaniard was involved in a training ground incident and the club decided to discipline him, with the banishment in place until the end of January.

That has given Wolves time to facilitate his exit – and it looks as though that will now come very soon…

It is being reported this afternoon by Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos of Sportime that Jonny is now ‘really close’ to completing his move to PAOK.

Chorianopoulos reported recently that the Greek giants were hopeful of signing Jonny without paying a fee, even though he still has a contract with Wolves until the summer of 2025. He was said to be their ‘primary target’.

He wrote on X earlier today: “PAOK are really close to sign Jonny Otto from Wolves. Otto is about to become a free agent till Friday and will travel to Thessaloniki for final talks and detail.”

In addition to this, Express & Star journalist Liam Keen reported earlier today that Jonny was close to agreeing personal terms with PAOK and that they were ‘pushing’ to reach an agreement with Wolves.

Wolves cutting their losses?

This is a very interesting claim from Chorianopoulos considering Jonny still has a contract with Wolves until the summer of 2025.

The suggestion here is that Wanderers are ready to terminate the player’s contract so that he will be a free agent, with PAOK then signing him.

There is no mention of any nominal fee, and it seems like Wolves are ready to cut their losses at this point, on a player who once cost £15 million.

Wanderers are understood to be keen to move Jonny on after what happened at the training ground, but it would definitely be a bit of a surprise if the club just allowed him to go for nothing.

It could be that Wolves simply see no way back for a player who is 29 now and has had two serious injuries, and has not been a regular in the starting XI for some time. Maybe the club are happy to pay up the rest of his contract and get him off the wage bill.
