Player Wolves held Deadline Day talks for ‘really pushed’ for transfer but deal collapsed

Monday saw Wolves enjoy a busy end to the January transfer window. The Old Gold sold one player and brought in two.

Mario Lemina left Wolves in favour of a return to Galatasaray, and despite signing Emmanuel Agbadou earlier in the window from Stade Reims, Vitor Pereira needed more additions.

The Wolves owners left it late but did manage to get two new faces through the door before Monday night’s deadline.

Midfielder Marshall Munetsi became Wolves’ second signing from Stade Reims this window. The Zimbabwe international joined on a three-and-a-half-year contract in a deal worth £16.6 million.

And at centre-back, Wolves welcomed Nasser Djiga, who joined on a five-and-a-half-year contract from Red Star in a deal worth £10 million. And although fans are delighted with Djiga’s arrival, the Old Gold could’ve easily ended up with a different defender.

Conor Coady wanted Wolves return

After hearing his old club were in the market for a new centre-back, former captain Conor Coady was interested in making a Wolves return.

The 31-year-old left the Midlands in favour of a move to Everton in 2022. Things at Goodison Park didn’t go as planned for the Liverpool-born defender though, so he was transferred to Leicester City after just one season.

With the Foxes since 2023, Coady’s playing time has reduced. He has started in just eight Premier League matches this season and doesn’t appear to be in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s long-term plans.

Consequently, Coady, who still has 18 months left on his deal, is looking for a way out of the King Power, and according to Alex Richards ‘really pushed’ to return to Wolves, but despite his former club holding talks with Leicester City, an agreement never materialised.

Moved on

Coady spent seven years at Molineux and remains one of the most well-liked players among fans, but bringing him back would’ve been more for sentimental purposes rather than sporting.

Approaching his 32nd birthday, if Coady can’t get a game for one relegation contender, why would he for another?

Wolves don’t always make the right decision in the transfer market, but on this occasion, they were right to walk away and move for Djiga instead.

The African is a younger, hungrier, more mobile centre-back who will find adapting to Pereira’s system a lot easier.
