Player sold by Wolves in July 2023 could now already be joining a new club

Ryan Giles was one of the several players to depart in last summer’s fire sale and he could now be on the move again.

Wolves were forced into offloading several of their stars to comply with financial fair play rules last summer.

This saw the likes of Matheus Nunes, Nathan Collins, Raul Jimenez, Ruben Neves, Conor Coady and Ryan Giles depart the club.

While the majority on that list were pivotal in leading Wolves through the golden years at Molineux, Giles was someone who was never awarded a first-team opportunity.

The academy graduate was loaned out on eight different occasions and enjoyed successful spells at several clubs, including Cardiff City and Middlesbrough.

Many felt his spell at Boro last season, in particular, should have awarded him a chance in Gary O’Neil’s side after helping them reach the play-offs.

He created more chances and supplied more assists (11) than any other defender in the Championship but he was instead shifted onto newly-promoted Luton Town for £5 million in the summer.

How has Ryan Giles performed at Luton Town?

Speaking after signing for the Hatters, he said: “I’ve reached the point that at my age that I’ve had a lot of loans and I feel those experiences have made me the player and the person I am today. Now this is a different direction, a new beginning, a new chapter.”

Giles left Molineux in search of regular football in the top flight and although he thought Kenilworth Road would have been the correct destination, he has only made five starts this term.

Luton manager Rob Edwards has preferred to use Alfie Doughty in the left-wing back role. He’s been one of his side’s most impressive performers and the former Wolves man has struggled to dislodge him.

As a result, the 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Hatters just six months after joining.

Leeds and Cardiff want Ryan Giles

After excelling at Middlesbrough last term, it’s understandable that multiple Championship clubs – including Leeds and Cardiff – are interested in luring Luton’s record signing back to the second tier.

That is according to TEAMtalk, who claim that both clubs are willing to challenge for Giles’ signature.

Given their position in the table, Edwards doesn’t want to lose the wing-back as it would weaken their squad in their quest for survival.

On the evidence of his performances this season, perhaps Wolves were right to cash in on Giles.

Many would have questioned that decision and wanted to see him given a chance, but after struggling for game time in a side battling against relegation, O’Neil probably knew he wasn’t up to the Premier League standard.
