Molineux target has ‘top-end clubs’ trying to sign him this summer, but Wolves ‘relatively confident’

Wolves are looking to make some more additions to their squad before the transfer window closes in a few weeks – and the club face competition over one target they’ve just bid for.

Three new faces are in for Gary O’Neil so far.

Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima and Jorgen Strand Larsen have all made good impressions since joining the club, and fans are looking forward to seeing them in competitive match action.

Tommy Doyle also turned his loan move from Manchester City permanent.

In recent days, Wolves have been linked with exciting young French defender Bastien Meupiyou. One bid was sent over the weekend, and the club are said to have sent another today worth £4.26 million.

Wolves are waiting on a reply from Nantes, who might just fancy holding out for as long as possible.

That is because interest in Meupiyou is high.

Currently, O’Neil has four centre-back options.

Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera seem like they could be the starting pair against Arsenal this weekend in Wolves’ first Premier League game, after featuring together a few times in pre-season.

There is also Craig Dawson and Santiago Bueno.

Many Wolves fans feel the club need to be bringing in a centre-back with experience before the window closes.

Apparently, Wolves will seek to do that even if Meupiyou signs, which is good news.

But regarding Meupiyou, Wolves might have their work cut out, with Liam Keen providing an update on the player this evening.

Speaking on the Wolverhampton Sport radio show, he said: “I know for a fact that Wolves aren’t the only club that have looked at him. There’s some very big clubs that have looked at him, we’re talking top-end clubs.”

Keen then provided some more information regarding where the actual deal is at, and it seems Wolves are in a decent place at the moment despite the presence of those top-end clubs.

“Wolves are very much in negotiations to make that happen. I would go as far as saying they’re relatively confident it would happen at this point. But you can’t say it’s done until it’s done.”

Keen also adds that Meupiyou would be considered for first-team football by Wolves, but could also possibly get some U21s games here and there.

Wolves are proven as a great club for young overseas players

Wolves have already been successful once this summer in bringing one young player from overseas to the club as a result of being honest about their project.

Pedro Lima completed a move from Sport Recife, having been all set to go to Chelsea originally.

Matt Hobbs said when he signed: “We are a club that sells our project through pathway, opportunity and connection, while other clubs use different tools like location, size and money.”

Wolves will likely use that same sell in the talks to sign Meupiyou, and hopefully this will be more appealing to him than what some of these other ‘top-end’ clubs are offering.

Wolves will have surely made him aware that they have had success plucking players from relative obscurity and turning them into top players worth millions. So this might just be what swings it for Wolves.
