But it was decided that the Irishman should move on, with Wolves replacing him with Kieran Trippier.

Doherty departs having racked up almost 400 appearances across two stints for Wolves.

And for all that he has done for the club, Dave Edwards has paid a nice tribute to his former teammate in his latest E&S column.

Doherty first signed for Wolves all the way back in 2010 from Bohemians for about £75,000.

He would go on to play a huge role in helping to get Wolves up the Football League, but his best years came under Nuno Espirito Santo, who deployed him as a wing-back.

Doherty would regularly contribute in the final third, and him and Jonny Castro Otto were regularly praised for their effectiveness as Wolves made waves in the Premier League after getting promoted.

Doherty left Wolves in 2020, but returned a few years later after spells at Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid.

In his second spell he was used more defensively, often playing on the right of a back three. He now leaves again, and Dave Edwards believes he departs as a legend of the club.

He said: “He’s a better one-v-one defender than people think, but the numbers he got going forward were phenomenal.

“He had his move to Spurs and Atletico Madrid and returned to Wolves to find a very different team to the one he left, but overall the journey has been brilliant for him.

“He’s had a fabulous Wolves career and I’m sad to see him go, but he definitely leaves the club as a legend. I wish him the best in whatever his next move in football is.”

It is currently unclear where Doherty may head next.

But the 34-year-old still has plenty to offer so it’ll be interesting to see his next destination.

But it’s difficult to argue with Edwards’ assessment. He may have left and come back, but Doherty is still a Wolves legend having played such a big part in the club’s rise throughout the 2010s.

He was also regularly one of the only players to show leadership during the the tougher times of late.
