Liam Keen says what he expects to happen with Joao Gomes amid Man United transfer links

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes continues to be subject of transfer speculation.

Given the struggles Wolves have had this term, it was perhaps inevitable that there would be some talk about Gomes’ future just weeks out from the January transfer window.

Ultimately, Joao Gomes is one of Wolves’ best players, and is someone who is adored by the Molineux faithful.

Many will agree that he hasn’t been at his best this season. But then, that can be said for most players in the squad. But at least Gomes has never let up and always given absolutely everything.

The Brazilian is so easy to root for in the way that he plays.

His energy and tenacity make him a terrific player and unfortunately, it is very much starting to feel like he won’t be at the club for much longer.

Manchester United have been linked with Gomes, and now Liam Keen has shared what he knows about the situation.

Gomes has been a breath of fresh air for Wolves since he signed from Flamengo in January 2023.

He endeared himself to fans even before he actually officially became a Wolves player, with reports indicating that he was pushing for a move to Molineux despite interest from Lyon, who had come in with a higher transfer bid.

He’s gone on to become a great player, and undoubtedly, it’s going to sting when he departs.

But when might that be?

Liam Keen spoke about Wolves’ number eight on the latest E&S podcast, and believes he won’t be in an old gold shirt for too much longer, although he dismisses the idea of a January exit.

He said: “Joao Gomes to Man United is being pushed quite heavily at the minute. I know for a fact that United like him, definitely. I know that, absolutely, they liked him in the summer as well. But they were looking at Carlos Baleba at Brighton instead.

“Talks about £44 million being enough to get him out of Wolves… I find it very hard to believe that Wolves would go down that route. I find it hard to believe they’d let him go in January full stop. Let alone for that money.

“I do expect him to leave Wolves at some point, whether it’s next summer or in the near future. But I’d be very surprised if it’s that (January). If you want an opportunity to stay up, you don’t sell Joao Gomes in January do you?”

Wolves have apparently promised Rob Edwards that Gomes won’t be sold in January, so between that and this update from Keen, a January exit for The Pitbull looks to be very unlikely.

However, there is a high chance he goes in the summer of 2026.

Even if Wolves somehow stay in the Premier League, Gomes will have been at the club for three-and-a-half years.

How much is Joao Gomes worth in today’s market?

That is prime selling time for Fosun, and Gomes would certainly not be short of suitors – even if United get someone else in January.

There’s no doubting he genuinely loves the club. But Gomes will surely be considering his options – ultimately, he’ll want to better himself, and the sad reality is that Wolves aren’t going anywhere with Fosun at the helm.
