League champions set to beat Wolves to transfer target as another potential Nelson Semedo replacement goes begging

Wolves fans are concerned about the new season with just two new signings made so far this summer – and another potential replacement for Nelson Semedo looks set to go begging.

Nelson Semedo is a free agent and has been since the end of June.

Bizarrely, there still hasn’t been any communication regarding his decision.

Vitor Pereira has effectively confirmed Semedo’s departure by stating recently that Wolves were looking at replacements.

But there has not yet been an official announcement from Wolves.

It was thought that Marc Pubill would replace Semedo at Wolves, but Atletico Madrid hijacked the move at the eleventh hour, prompting Wolves to renew their search.

But it looks as though one of Wolves’ alternatives also won’t be coming to Molineux.

Wolves target Georgios Vagiannidis set to join Sporting CP

Earlier this month, it was claimed that Wolves held an interest in Georgios Vagiannidis of Panathinaikos.

It was suggested that Wolves were strongly considering a move for Vagiannidis, amid the uncertainty over Nelson Semedo.

A few days later, it was then claimed that Wolves were ready to submit a bid for Vagiannidis. But at the same time, interest from Sporting CP was mentioned.

Unfortunately, it now appears that Sporting will win this particularly transfer race.

Portuguese outlet A Bola are reporting today that the 2024/25 Portuguese league champions are set to sign the Greece international, with the move ‘practically completed’ now.

It is stated that the player is currently even looking for a house in the Lisbon area, ahead of his proposed move.

He is due in the country on Thursday to finalise the transfer.

Ki-Jana Hoever’s position has strengthened at Wolves

The new season is only three weeks away now, and Wolves still don’t have their replacement for Semedo.

The collapsed Pubill deal was frustrating, although some have suggested Wolves may be better off not signing a player who never gave the impression he truly wanted to join.

Now it seems Vagiannidis will join Sporting, and no one can really blame him for that – they are a huge club in Portugal who fight regularly fight for the league title these days.

They can also, crucially, offer Champions League football.

There is a growing feeling that Ki-Jana Hoever might actually be set for a renaissance at Wolves.

Hoever has made an impression in pre-season and all of a sudden he looks to be a contender to replace Semedo.

Hoever says he is ready to play for Wolves this season, and Vitor Pereira might just have to hand him a chance at this point.
