Jose Sa ‘guaranteed’ to leave Wolves as Liam Keen speaks on Sam Johnstone future

The Wolves goalkeepers’ union is likely to be looking quite different next season, with journalist Liam Keen speaking about Jose Sa and Sam Johnstone.

The 2025/26 season has been another campaign where we’ve seen both Jose Sa and Sam Johnstone have their moments in goal.

Sa started as the number one, but poor form saw him lose his place to Johnstone, who had a run of 11 straight Premier League games from the end of September to December.

But in 2026 it has been Sa all the way for Rob Edwards, and the Portuguese has even worn the captain’s armband of late.

Wolves are all but certain to drop into the Championship for next season, which means many players will be leaving.

And it looks like there’s no chance Sa will be sticking around.

Journalist Liam Keen was asked about the future of the goalkeepers on the latest E&S podcast.

And he feels Sa will definitely go, but Johnstone’s future is a little less clear.

He said: “It’s a tough one. I think there’ll be a clean break with goalkeepers. Bring a new number one in.

“Maybe have Bentley as a number two, or they may just make a clean break across the department. But I think they’ll make a pretty clean break.

“I think Sa is guaranteed to go. Johnstone obviously has experience there, he can play in the Championship, of course he can. I feel like maybe he’ll want a fresh start to go elsewhere.

“It also depends on the summer in general.

“Because is the goalkeeper going to be your number one priority? It probably isn’t. Especially if Johnstone is willing to stay. It probably doesn’t become your priority. So I think it depends on how the summer goes with other positions as well. I would suspect there’s movement there.”

Sa’s spell at Wolves has been a rollercoaster

With Sa having just one year left on his contract from this summer, there is just no way Wolves don’t cash in on him.

Sa’s time at Wolves has certainly been chaotic.

He was actually superb in his very first season at Molineux, with the Portuguese stopper looking like a worthy successor to Rui Patricio initially. He even won Wolves’ Player of the Season.

But in more recent seasons, Sa has struggled for consistency.

He’s had games where he’s looked unbeatable. But he’s also made plenty of howlers, with his rash nature costing Wolves points.

But he’s certainly worn his heart on his sleeve, and earlier this season Sa drew praise from supporters, as he fronted up to fans outside Molineux after a 3-2 defeat to Burnley, despite not even playing. That showed he cared deeply about Wolves’ worrying situation.

Without doubt he is a character, who’ll deserve a good reception if he does indeed leave.
