‘I’ve made it clear’… Matheus Cunha makes Wolves transfer revelation amid interest

Matheus Cunha has opened up about his future at Wolves amid building speculation.

In the January window, Cunha was not short of admirers as Wolves battled to tie their main man down to a new deal.

Though the Old Gold succeeded in getting the 25-year-old to sign on the dotted line, the agreement only reinforced the likelihood of the Brazilian leaving in the summer.

Cunha is now protected by a release clause, giving clubs the chance to capture the forward for just £62.5m at the end of the season, something that looks certain to happen.

Matheus Cunha hints at Wolves exit

There was some concern that Cunha would leave in January as interest from clubs came rolling in.

Arsenal made contact with Cunha over a possible transfer, but the Brazilian stayed put and has now opened up about why he did not leave.

“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,” Cunha told The Guardian

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.”

If there was any hope that Cunha would stay at Wolves after this season, the player has crushed it, revealing that he’s ‘made it clear’ that he wants a new challenge.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

The script is all but written for Cunha to fulfil a transfer away from Molineux at the end of the season, with his ambition to keep the Old Gold up almost complete.

Cunha’s admission is a blow

Even Gary O’Neil said that Cunha leaving would be an inevitability, but so long as the Brazilian was at the club, doubts were a worry for the future.

Now that the player himself has opened the door to leave, a punishing blow of reality has been dealt.

Pereira now has a decision to make regarding how to handle the 25-year-old’s final weeks at Wolves, with an argument to be had over whether the forward should play.

Of course, the manager will want what’s best for his squad, but from now on, a thought will be given to how the Old Gold fare without their star man, who will be gone in the summer.
