Rumoured Wolves target Lewis Ferguson has been crowned Serie A midfielder in Italy, reinforcing just what Gary O’Neil could have if the 24-year-old remains a point of interest in the transfer window.
It’s been quite the season for Bologna star Lewis Ferguson, who has thrived in Serie A after making the move from Scotland to Italy in 2022.
The 24-year-old has found joy playing under coach Thiago Motta, who has seen the light in the former Aberdeen midfielder, with the Bologna manager not the only person to acknowledge the Scotland international’s presence.
Yesterday, Ferguson was named Serie A midfielder of the year, and handed the Bulgarelli Number 8 Award, following in the footsteps of previous winners Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Barella.
The dynamic midfielder has been integral to Bologna’s form this term, with Motta’s side sitting in fourth in the Serie A table only two points shy of Juventus.
Having scored six goals and secured five assists in 33 appearances over the 2023/24 calendar, the Scotsman has been identified as Italy’s best in his position, making him a player to eye ahead of the transfer window.

Wolves are interested in Lewis Ferguson
As reported by HITC in March, Wolves are one of the clubs interested in Ferguson ahead of the summer, with Nottingham Forest also said to admire the 24-year-old.
HITC explained that the Old Gold are ‘keeping tabs’ on the midfielder, who has surely gone up in Gary O’Neil’s estimations after earning the midfielder of the year prize.
Agonisingly, one negative that has arisen since the report of Wolves’ interest is that in April, Ferguson’s season was cut short as he sustained a gruelling ACL injury, which could keep him out of action until the start of 2025.
Still, it could be an interesting prospect to follow ahead of the 2024/25 campaign if Wolves are still listed as admirers of the Scottish talent when he is fit to return to action.
What Lewis Ferguson could offer Gary O’Neil
Lauded as ‘incredible’ by journalist Alasdair Mackenzie for his impact at Bologna, Ferguson could offer a great deal to Wolves if he is to remain on O’Neil’s wanted list.
Purchased for only £3m from Aberdeen in 2022, the midfielder has shown levels to his game that many clubs desire to have in their squad, with Wolves being no different.
As explained by the player himself, via The Athletic, Motta’s coaching style has inspired the former Scottish Premiership whiz to become ‘really fluid’ in his approach to play, undertaking a variety of roles rather than a fixed position.
It’s an interesting area of improvement for Ferguson and one that resonates at Molineux under O’Neil, as the Englishman has sculpted a number of his players to become more rounded, with the likes of Mario Lemina and Rayan Ait-Nouri instances of that.
The flexibility that the Wolves target has in his locker is something that would charm O’Neil, making his injury even more frustrating when considering what the boss could have acquired this summer.
