‘Impossible’: Romano says Wolves tried to sign 24-year-old, he’s now making £13m move elsewhere

Wolves attempted to sign Mateo Retegui, but couldn’t agree a deal due to their FFP issues.

Wanderers are seemingly seeking to add another striker to the squad.

It has been claimed that Raul Jimenez is now set to join Fulham this summer, with the Cottagers having agreed a fee of £5.5 million with Wolves for the Mexican.

Jimenez leaving would mean Julen Lopetegui would have just two out-and-out number nines in the form of Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva.

And there is no telling if Silva will remain at Wolves this summer.

He’s got a number of clubs tracking him at the moment.

So Wolves are looking at the market and did identify Retegui. But that will now definitely not be happening.

Mateo Retegui set for Genoa after Wolves tried and failed to sign striker

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Retegui is set to join Italian outfit Genoa.

He says that a medical for the player should be taking place today.

Another Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that the move will cost Genoa around £13 million.

Apparently, the Italy international – who was actually born in San Fernando, Argentina – will sign for them tomorrow.

Romano has actually said in his tweet that Wolves did try to sign Retegui. He said: “Mateo Retegui to Genoa, here we go! Agreement in place with Italian national team striker who joins from Tigre.

“Understand Retegui will undergo first part of medical on Monday then sign in Genova on Tuesday. Wolves tried — but FFP issues made it impossible.”

Frustration for Wolves fans as club miss out on Retegui

It has been a long summer so far for Wolves fans.

A few players have been sold, with around £80 million accumulated from their sales.

Daniel Podence and Jimenez are also set to go.

But on the incomings front, so far only Matt Doherty has arrived on a free.

Julen Lopetegui may well be feeling frustrated, so hopefully the board can land the head coach some new players before much longer.
