‘I had other options’: Star hints at Wolves interest, as he explains his £17m move elsewhere

Viktor Gyokeres has outlined why he made a move to Sporting CP, and potentially hinted at interest from Wolves.

The Sweden international has officially secured a move to the Portuguese outfit, and become their new number nine.

Gyokeres wowed last season with Coventry City, scoring 22 goals in all competitions.

He came very close to helping the Sky Blues gain promotion to the Premier League. In the end, they lost on penalties to Luton Town.

Coventry not getting promoted was always likely to result in Gyokeres being poached big a bigger club.

Wolves fans hoped the 25-year-old would be heading to Molineux this summer.

But Gyokeres opted to move to Portugal, and the striker has now explained why he made that move.

The player has given a first interview, and appeared to suggest that there was indeed some interest from Wolves.

But seemingly, there just wasn’t a strong enough desire from Wanderers and others to sign him in comparison to Sporting.

He said (via Record): “It’s a fantastic feeling to sign for Sporting, and I was expecting this and it’s great to have everything closed and to finally be here. I’m very happy.

“The club has a lot of history and when I heard about the interest it was an easy choice. I had other options, but I felt that Sporting was the team that was most interested in me and when someone wants you, it means they want you very much and they will take care of you. This was the best option.”

Wolves may not have been in a position to sign Viktor Gyokeres

It sounds very much as though Gyokeres simply couldn’t say no to Sporting given how keen they were.

Obviously Wolves are not named as one of the other potential options for Gyokeres.

But reports were very frequent about Wanderers wanting to sign him. And they have been since January.

It was even claimed at one point that Wolves were leading the chase for the former Brighton man.

Perhaps ultimately, Wolves just weren’t in a position to sign Gyokeres. His move to Sporting was for an initial £17 million according to O Jogo. This actually makes him Sporting’s most expensive signing ever.

As we know, Wolves are working to ease their financial problems and no new players have come in yet.

Potentially, Wolves may have been waiting on what happens with Fabio Silva. Apparently, Julen Lopetegui is keen to take a look at the player. But there have been reports he wants to leave.
