Matheus Cunha has signed a new contract with Wolves, in what is a big boost for the club.
The Brazilian put pen to paper after scoring for Wolves in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend.
It was something that had been on the cards for a while. But there was then some speculation about Matheus Cunha’s future, causing some to worry if he would actually sign.
At one stage, it looked as though Cunha might actually leave.
But he ended up signing, with Cunha suggesting to Wolves fans now is the time to keep fighting. And supposedly, Cunha’s new contract includes a new £62.5 million release clause, which fans have been discussing on social media.
Some feel that it is perhaps a little low.
But Cunha may not have signed had a higher figure been proposed, and now an interesting claim has been made regarding his clause.
Matheus Cunha and his representatives wanted lower relegation release clause in his new Wolves contract

It’s been claimed by Give Me Sport that Cunha’s new release clause is set at £62.5 million regardless of anything.
It becomes active this summer, and can be triggered by any club.
Some have wondered if Cunha’s release clause will become lower if Wolves happen to get relegated.
But that is not the case – although interestingly, Cunha and his team apparently did want the release clause to be lower in the event of relegation.
GMS say that there were some initial discussions between Cunha and Wolves about the clause lowering if the club slipped into the Championship.
But in the end, Wolves got their way and the clause will be £62.5 million.

Cunha may have gentleman’s agreement with Wolves in case of relegation
It is interesting to see that Cunha’s release clause in his new deal won’t actually be lower if Wolves get relegated.
But one would imagine there has to be some kind of gentleman’s agreement between Cunha and Wolves for him to leave for less than £62.5 million if no club is willing to trigger it and the club is in the Championship.

It is hard to imagine clubs wanting to pay that much money if Wolves have gone down, and Cunha would not take too kindly to Wolves digging their heels in.
It will be interesting to see what happens this summer. But surely, Cunha remaining a Wolves player for the 2025/26 season feels very unlikely.
