How Tommy Doyle can seal permanent Birmingham transfer as shock Wolves clause shared

Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle is spending the 2025/26 season on loan at Birmingham City, and an interesting claim has been made about his move today.

Tommy Doyle recently joined Blues, after it was decided it was best for him to move on following his struggles last season.

Doyle couldn’t get regular minutes under Gary O’Neil or Vitor Pereira, and finished the campaign with just 26 appearances and 656 minutes to his name.

Recently, Doyle admitted he didn’t enjoy his football last season, having to spend most of his time watching from the bench.

His exit was no real surprise in the end, and Birmingham have made a statement of intent signing him.

Doyle has already impressed Birmingham fans in pre-season, and now it has been claimed that Doyle could actually seal a permanent move to Blues if one thing happens this season.

It has been reported by the E&S that a permanent transfer clause was actually inserted into Doyle’s loan deal.

This was not reported at the time of the deal, but there is a chance now that Doyle may not return to Molineux.

It’s claimed that Doyle will automatically make a £10 million transfer to Birmingham if they seal promotion to the Premier League next year.

Of course, Birmingham just gained promotion to the Championship from League One.

But they are showing ambition this summer, and there is a clear desire to try and do something special.

Man City still hold sell-on clause over Doyle

It is worth pointing out that Wolves would not see all of that £10 million fee if Birmingham did achieve promotion.

That’s because Manchester City still hold a whopping 50% sell-on clause over Doyle’s next permanent move from Wolves.

That is 50% of any profit Wolves make on the player.

Doyle was signed by Wolves for around £4.3 million last year, so if he left for £10 million, then City would be due approximately £2.85 million of the fee, netting Wolves just over £7 million.

So certainly, it is worth keeping an eye on Birmingham’s season in 2025/26 to see if Doyle – previously branded ‘outstanding’ by former Wolves winger Mark Kennedy – will end up returning to Wolves or not.

Theoretically, Birmingham could still negotiate with Wolves to sign Doyle permanently even if they missed out on promotion.
