How Mikel Arteta feels about Matheus Cunha amid concerns from other clubs

Wolves have had a chaotic few days. Not only did the Old Gold crash out of the FA Cup at the fifth round stage on penalties, but Matheus Cunha’s straight red card has plunged the striker into the spotlight.

Cunha’s red card against Bournemouth came after he violently clashed with Milos Kerkez. The Brazilian lost his head and was sent packing despite scoring a wonder goal earlier in the game.

As a result, the South American’s temperament has been questioned and a summer transfer is now in doubt.

Mikel Arteta having ‘reservations’ about signing Matheus Cunha

It has been well reported that Arsenal like Cunha. The Gunners’ need for a striker is even more well known.

Mikel Arteta failed to sign a forward last summer and again in January, and has since lost Kai Havertz through injury. The Gunners’ over-reliance on the sidelined German will almost certainly cost the side the chance to fight for the title.

Certain not to make the same mistake again this summer, Arteta will look to sign a new striker and Cunha is one of the names on his list.

Despite recently penning a new Wolves contract, Cunha’s deal includes a release clause worth a reported £62.5 million — which, if activated, would see the South American become the Old Gold’s most expensive-ever sale.

However, according to talkSPORT, the Brazilian may not end up at the Emirates next season with Arteta questioning his temperament. The Spaniard is said to have ‘reservations over the forward’s character’.

Not the first time

Saturday’s dismissal wasn’t the first time Cunha has seen red this season.

The Brazilian was handed a two-match ban after he clashed with one of Ipswich Town’s staff members. The suspension would have been longer but Cunha offered to replace the backroom member’s glasses, which got broken during the altercation.

Consequently, clubs are worried about Cunha’s character, and, unsurprisingly a summer transfer is now under threat — certainly one worth his minimum release clause anyway.

If Cunha has hopes of moving to a top-six side, he will need to work overtime between now and the end of the season to restore some of the damage done to his reputation.
