How many players Wolves are set to sign in January as club prepare to announce 2022/23 losses

Wolves will reportedly only sign up to two players in January, with the club set to announce losses for the 2022/23 season.

The next transfer window is almost upon us, and it will be Gary O’Neil‘s first full window as manager.

He oversaw the final days of the summer window, with four players coming in after he had been announced as Julen Lopetegui’s successor. The sale of Matheus Nunes then opened the door for Wolves to sign Santiago Bueno, Enso Gonzalez, Tommy Doyle and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

It has been reported that O’Neil wants to sign a new striker above all else, and it has also been suggested a new wide forward could come in.

This evening, The Telegraph’s John Percy has provided an update on the situation at Wolves and what is likely to be happening next month…

As Wolves fans well know, there have been some financial worries for the club recently.

Wanderers needed to sell a host of players in the summer in order to make sure they do not breach FFP rules.

Profit and sustainability rules state that clubs must not lose more than £105 million over three years. For the 2022-23 financial year, the club are apparently forecasting losses of about £65 million, which follows £45 million the year before.

Wolves’ situation eased after the sales of Ruben Neves, Nathan Collins, Raul Jimenez and Matheus Nunes. High-earning players such as Adama Traore, Joao Moutinho and Diego Costa also left at the end of their contracts.

The Telegraph now report that Wolves’ current financial situation will likely only permit them to sign up to two new players next month.

It is stated that officials will not be risking the club’s future by spending significantly – like last January – but there is scope to get a couple of new faces in.

While there is a determination to support O’Neil in the window, ‘modest fees or loans are likely to be Wolves’ limit’.

Struggles likely for Wolves this season

The situation for Wolves doesn’t sound massively encouraging, but at least the club will be able to get a couple of new faces in, as opposed to just not doing anything at all.

The club will be able to spend more freely next summer as it will be a new cycle for FFP, but for now it seems like Wolves are still fairly restricted.

O’Neil has done some good work since he came in, but the second half of the current season is likely to be a challenge since he will not be able to reinforce significantly.

Hopefully, he is just able to bring in that new striker he reportedly really craves.

There’s been talk of a new wide forward, but Wolves actually may also need a central defender, with the result against West Ham showing the back four system is a risk.
