How close Wolves really came to signing Thomas Kristensen on transfer deadline day after failed bid

Wolves secured the double deadline day swoop of Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi, although they did also attempt to sign centre-back Thomas Kristensen.

Djiga joined Wolves in a £10m transfer from Champions League side Red Star Belgrade while Munetsi was captured from Reims for around £16.6m.

The Old Gold left it late to complete their business, as they signed two centre-backs and a midfielder when Vitor Pereira also wanted an attacker.

Pereira will now hope these last-minute dealings can be the catalyst for Premier League survival this term, with Wolves clinching a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Interestingly, it wasn’t just Djiga and Munetsi who were on their deadline day radar, as the Wanderers aimed to sign Thomas Kristensen from Udinese.

Wolves fell £1.2 million short of Udinese’s Thomas Kristensen valuation

In their pursuit of a centre-back, Wolves showed an interest in Kristensen from Udinese before Djiga emerged as an option.

Wolves even saw a £12.5m bid for Kristensen rejected on deadline day, with the Italian side reluctant to sell their colossal defender.

However, that wasn’t the case throughout the window, as according to Messaggero Veneto, the Serie A club had set a £13.7 million asking price on the 23-year-old.

Frustratingly, it meant that Wolves fell £1.2 million short of triggering their initial January asking price, with Pereira moving on to signing Djiga instead.

Kristensen, who has featured 12 times in the Italian top division this term, would have supplied Pereira with physicality in defence as he stands at a giant 6 foot 6.

That being said, Wolves fans are pleased Djiga signed a 5.5-year contract at Molineux, where he’ll hope to establish himself as a top defender.

Conor Coady wanted to re-sign for Wolves

Alongside the successful pursuit of Djiga and a failed bid for Kristensen, Wolves also wanted to re-sign Conor Coady from Leicester City.

The 31-year-old has only made 10 appearances for the Foxes this term, although that still didn’t stop them pursuing their former captain.

According to some reports, Coady was interested in a return to Wolves, with Pereira perhaps seeing him as a leadership presence in the dressing room.

That being said, it was probably a blessing that the Old Gold didn’t recapture the Englishman as acquiring Djiga – a player whose younger and boasts bags of potential – was much the better option.
