How close Arsenal currently are to signing Matheus Cunha as Wolves stance shared

The Matheus Cunha situation is set to dominate the headlines in the coming days.

Wolves could well be set to lose their talisman at the end of the transfer window, with the number 10 seemingly stalling over a new contract at Molineux, amid interest from other clubs.

Cunha and his agent are stalling the new contract negotiations, and the feeling is that clubs could be about to test Wolves’ resolve over the player.

Several sides are interested in Cunha, with even Nottingham Forest now showing they are keen.

Arsenal also want Cunha and have shown interest for quite a while – and there’s now been an update on where the Gunners are currently at with their pursuit.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has reported on the interest from Arsenal in Cunha.

On social media last night there were rumours that an agreement had been reached.

But Jacobs says that is not the case. He wrote on X: “Matheus Cunha has not yet agreed personal terms with Arsenal, despite reports.

“However, Arsenal are in touch with Cunha’s camp and, like other suitors, opportunistic in case a January move presents itself.

“As of now, Wolves still trying to get Cunha to extend and don’t wish to sell in January. Only an incredible offer may change their stance. But Cunha is still a story to watch in the last days of the window, especially after Vítor Pereira’s comments.”

It is thought Cunha wants a relegation release clause in any new contract, but Wolves have not been willing to add one. The club have apparently told Cunha they will sell him without the need for one, as they wouldn’t be able to afford to keen him if the club went down.

A massive week for Wolves amid Cunha speculation

Few will have foreseen this situation a few weeks ago, especially when it was claimed Wolves were close to agreeing a new deal for Cunha.

But things have now changed, and the Brazilian’s immediate future is in real doubt.

Interest in the player is high, but it remains to be seen whether any club can match Wolves’ £80 million asking price.

If Cunha agitates for a move though, the club may well lower that £80 million valuation, as they won’t want to keep an unhappy player.

It is going to be a huge week for the club.

The Cunha situation needs to be resolved as soon as possible, because Wolves need to either know that he’s fully on board, or use the funds that his sale will generate to sign new players.
