Gerard Martin finally breaks silence on his Barcelona future amid links to Wolves

Manchester City completed the signing of Rayan Ait-Nouri this week, and now, Wolves have sought to replace him.

Hugo Bueno is the most likely candidate to secure the starting jersey in 2025/26 following his productive loan spell at Feyenoord, but a strong case can be made for potential new signings.

Wolves have been linked with Barcelona’s Gerard Martin, who was excellent for the Spanish giants last term, even dazzling in the Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan.

Martin has been valued at £10 million after his breakthrough season at Barcelona, and the 23-year-old could now test himself in the Premier League.

Though, after his latest game for the Spain U21s, any chance of him leaving Catalonia has been cast into doubt.

It was reported earlier this week that Martin wants to stay at Barcelona, despite the possibility of them signing left-back Alejandro Grimaldo.

Martin was in action for the Spain U21s against Slovakia on Wednesday. The young Spaniards played out a five-goal thriller in the first match of the Euro U21 Championships but it was unfortunately an unsavoury ending for the defender.

Martin was substituted at half-time after fracturing his hand and was ironically replaced by Wolves ace Bueno, who could be battling him for a place in the lineup next season.

While the youngster will now undergo surgery on the injury, he’s also dismissed any rumours of him leaving Barcelona this summer.

“I don’t pay attention to the rumours. I’m happy and focused on Barca, I’m happy with my season,” Martin told Jijantes.

“I think the staff is also happy with me, with my growth and what I still have to improve. I don’t think about anything else but Barca, so I’m calm.”

Wolves transfer plans assessed

A move for Martin could be dead in the water based on the above comments, though the promise of starting regularly and an increased salary could sway his thinking.

Wolves should explore other options in the left-back role, and Molineux News understands that Clement Bischoff is an option to replace Ait-Nouri and challenge Bueno.

While a left-back is one priority, finding a successor to 17-goal forward Matheus Cunha is another, with Wolves needing to add some serious firepower alongside Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Vitor Pereira also wants a left-sided centre-back to challenge Toti Gomes. Multiple players have been linked, although Robert Renan could be an option for Wolves after working with the Portuguese boss previously.
