Gary O’Neil shares encouraging transfer update as Wolves target further signings

Gary O’Neil has provided Wolves supporters with an encouraging transfer update ahead of their clash against Chelsea on Sunday.

A promising start to the summer transfer window has unravelled into a bit of a nightmare for Wolves.

Gary O’Neil captured three new players earlier this summer as Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima and Jorgen Strand Larsen arrived at Molineux.

But since confirming those additions, the club have since pocketed close to £100 million for both captain Max Kilman and winger Pedro Neto.

Supporters would have liked that money, or at least some, reinvested into the playing squad however, that is proving to be a problem.

Wolves are reportedly working with a tight budget at the moment and it was even revealed that Ipswich Town had moved ahead in the race to sign target Dara O’Shea, as they were unwilling to stump up an extra £2 million.

Whilst confidence from the fanbase has eroded and Fosun has understandably come under scrutiny, O’Neil has now at least given the supporters some hope.

Gary O’Neil says there is no ‘financial limit’ to sign players at Wolves

Wolves fans were under the allusion that the club weren’t able to spend much more money in the closing stages of the window.

Finance expert Adam Williams revealed that spending £20 million on players would put a strain on their PSR capacity.

That perhaps explains why the only deal the club are close to completing is one for Nantes defender Bastien Meupiyou, who is 18-years-old and will only cost £4.2 million after completing his medical.

In terms of finding replacements for Kilman and Neto in the final week of the window, those chances were beginning to look slim but O’Neil’s latest update has sparked a glimmer of positivity.

O’Neil said, as relayed by journalist Liam Keen on X: “I’ve seen some of the noise and there’s not really a financial limit, it’s whether the deals are right. We can definitely do stuff before the end of the window, it just needs to be right for the club. I’ve not heard any figure in my meetings.”

Wolves squad depth still a major issue

Wolves suffered from a lack of squad depth last season and it cost them towards the end.

The Wanderers were in the mix for Europe before their attacking players began to drop like flies, with Neto, Hwang Hee-chan, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Matheus Cunha all sidelined at one point.

This put a significant strain on the clubs resources as O’Neil was forced into promoting youngsters to the first-team, as Nathan Fraser, Tawanda Chirewa and Leon Chiwome were all given minutes in the Premier League.

So far, those depth issues haven’t been resolved and heading into the final week of the window, at least replacements for Kilman and Neto are needed for this to be classed as a decent summer.

Failure to do so could see Wolves struggle at points this season, especially when their squad is tested to the maximum with injuries and suspensions.
