Gary O’Neil must tread carefully around Wolves transfer target Yunus Akgun after Enzo Maresca warning

Wolves are already looking to the transfer window to bolster Gary O’Neil’s squad, according to reports.

Right now, the Old Gold are on cloud nine after Wolves’ 4-1 thrashing over Fulham on match week 12 of the Premier League season.

It was a long overdue victory on the road as O’Neil’s side collected three points away from home for the first time in nine months.

While there’s a sense of resurgence at Molineux as a result of consecutive wins, the understanding of the need for improvement very much remains.

Wolves target Galatasaray winger Yunus Akgun

One way that improvement can be delivered is in the transfer market, with Matt Hobbs already sounding out Wolves targets

Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, it’s reported that Wolves are eyeing Yunus Akgun, Galatasaray’s 24-year-old winger.

The Old Gold are believed to be keeping a close eye on the Turkish forward, who is one of Europe’s best based on his contribution in the Europa League this term.

Akgun has scored four goals in four Europa League matches this season, most recently finding the net against Tottenham in Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory.

Based on the Turkey international’s domestic form, it’s clear to see why Wolves would want to acquire his profile however, O’Neil and Hobbs might be tempted to reconsider.

Enzo Maresca had reservations about Akgun

Akgun might be shining at Galatasaray now, but it’s taken some time for the attacker to get to this point in his career.

The 24-year-old embarked on back-to-back loan spells at Adana Demirspor before being handed a loan opportunity in England with Leicester City, where he played a part in the Foxes’ return to the Premier League.

While the forward has a Championship winners medal to cherish, there were some reservations about his impact in the East Midlands.

Speaking to the media in January 2024, former Leicester boss Enzo Maresca shared his doubts about the player after he scored for the Foxes in the FA Cup.

“I know Yunus very well and he’s not doing what we expected from him,” Maresca admitted at the time.

“He can do much more. He can do for 95 minutes what he did in the second half. We expect much more.”

The now Chelsea manager took into consideration the time it takes players to adapt to the English game, which could make Hobbs and O’Neil think twice about his suitability to Molineux.

“He came here from a different country, he needs to adapt. We are very happy in terms of how he is improving, but he can do much, much, much more.”

Akgun’s season in England ended with him scoring twice in 29 appearances for Leicester, making a total of 13 starts under Maresca.
