Former Wolves star Jonny Castro Otto now set for new club after 18 months at PAOK

Jonny Castro Otto was a player many Wolves fans were very fond of.

In 2018, after sealing promotion back to the Premier League, Wolves were determined to build a squad that could compete in the top-flight under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Fosun were ambitious, and ready to hand Nuno the tools he needed to make a big impression.

And that is what he did, guiding Wolves to back-to-back seventh place finishes.

That 2018 summer window saw some terrific players join the club, including Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and Joao Moutinho.

And among the signings was Jonny Castro Otto, who arrived on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Midway through the 2018/19 season, Wolves turned Jonny’s move permanent after the Spaniard had put in a string of impressive displays.

Sadly though, Jonny’s Wolves career would be massively impacted by injury.

He suffered two ACL injuries, before leaving the club in January 2024 to join PAOK – and he could now be set to join a new club.

Jonny signed a one-and-a-half-year contract with Greek side PAOK.

In 2024/25, Jonny was a regular for the Greek side, and played mostly on the right side and featured heavily in the Europa League.

After making 53 appearances in total for the club, he is now set for a new chapter, with PAOK seemingly happy to move on from him after recently signing Jonjoe Kenny.

According to El Correo, Jonny is currently in talks with Deportivo Alaves about a free transfer. The publication reports that he is seen as a priority addition for Alaves, after the recent capture of Pablo Ibáñez.

He sees Alaves as the most attractive proposal right now.

So it looks like Jonny will be heading back to play in Spain after seven years away, and potentially his experience could be good for Alaves, who successfully avoided relegation last season by finishing 15th on 42 points – the same tally as Wolves in the Premier League.

Jonny is still fondly remembered by Wolves fans, although his exit from the club came about after a little bit of controversy.

Jonny reportedly had a training ground altercation with youngster Tawanda Chirewa that led to him being banished from training by Gary O’Neil.

His banishment also obviously extended to games, and Jonny missed eight Premier League matches before he then left.

Wolves reportedly received no transfer offers for Jonny and so his contract was cancelled by mutual consent, with the player joining PAOK a few days later.

Prior to the incident at training though, Jonny had not been in the team for Wolves, playing just minutes in the Premier League. His lack of minutes likely would have led to him leaving at the end of the season had he not left when he did.
