Wolves are on the verge of re-signing Matt Doherty, three years after he left to join Tottenham Hotspur.
The defender is currently a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid, whom he joined in January.
Doherty went there after falling out of favour at Spurs.
Earlier this week, many Wolves fans were stunned to read reports that the club were looking at bringing him back.
And it appears now that this move will be happening.
Fabrizio Romano provides update on Matt Doherty to Wolves
According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Wanderers are now close to bringing a deal for Doherty to fruition.
He writes this morning: “Understand talks to bring Matt Doherty back to Wolves are now advancing to the final stages, the agreement is now close.
“Doherty, expected to return on a free transfer.”
The move will almost certainly have repercussions for Jonny Castro Otto or Ki-Jana Hoever. Or maybe even both.
Just this morning, it was reported by the Express & Star that Wanderers are ready to hear offers for Spaniard Jonny.
He struggled last season and the feeling for many has been that it is time for him to seek pastures new.
Doherty back on free is understandable
On the face of it, it’s a bit of an uninspiring first signing of the summer for Wolves.
But there are a few reasons why this could actually be quite a smart play by the club.
Lopetegui seemingly isn’t convinced by Jonny.

Doherty would be a slight upgrade, and he would also be well suited to playing as a wing-back.
Of course, that is no longer the main system at Wolves. But Lopetegui has shown that he will go to a back three with wing-backs in-game if he needs to.
And it could be that he feels he has the players to help Doherty (such as Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes) if he was deploying him at right-back.
Doherty will no doubt be determined to rediscover the form he showed the first time round at Wolves.
