Fans react as Wolves-linked Joao Palhinha shines for Portugal

One player who was often linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers over the summer was defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha.

The 26-year-old was mentioned as a priority signing early in the window.

In the end, nothing came to fruition, as Wolves finished the summer with a whimper.

Hwang Hee-chan was the fifth and final first-team signing, joining on Sunday. The South Korea international was unveiled at Molineux just before the game with Manchester United.

A number of Wolves fans are disappointed that the club did not bring in a central midfielder.

And some have been left very annoyed by the fact Morgan Gibbs-White has been allowed to leave on loan.

Bruno Lage currently only has three senior midfield options at his disposal, which is concerning.

Palhinha would have been a tremendous addition for the club, but maybe a move was never really on.

He played a big role in Sporting CP’s surge to the league title last season.

He is a key player for them, and he will also be playing Champions League football this term.

Palhinha was in action for Portugal last night against the Republic of Ireland.

Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed all the headlines for scoring a last-gasp winner and becoming the outright leading goalscorer in men’s international football.

But Palhinha had a solid outing. According to Sofascore, during his 73-minute showing, he completed 38/43 passes (88%) and won 7/9 duels.

He also made four tackles, with only Joao Cancelo making more (5).
