‘Definitely’: Wolves told they’re about to sign ‘an unbelievable player’ in 36-cap international

Molineux legend Steve Bull has described Matt Doherty as ‘an unbelievable player’, as Wolves close in on his signing.

Last week, news dropped that Wolves were in talks to bring the player back, three years after he left to join Tottenham Hotspur.

The 31-year-old has had a tricky past few years.

At Spurs he struggled to replicate the form he showed at Wolves and in January of this year, he left to join Atletico Madrid.

He played just two games for the Spanish giants.

At the end of the 2022/23 season he became a free agent, and he is now set to make a sensational return to Wolves.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has said that the negotiations are in the ‘final stages’.

Steve Bull backs Wolves move for ‘unbelievable’ Matt Doherty

Doherty coming back to Wolves has definitely split fans down the middle.

Many feel this is an uninspiring move.

But others feel a free swoop for Doherty could actually be quite a shrewd move.

Bull is in the latter camp, and really rates the player.

He said in his latest Express & Star column: “He was a great asset to the club, brought some goals, some skill – I think he’s an unbelievable player.

“It was probably a mistake for him to leave in the first place, but he had to go chase his dream. It didn’t work out and hopefully he’s coming back and will add to this squad.

“We’re a bit threadbare at the moment, so he will definitely bring something to this team.

“He ticks a few boxes for Wolves. He’d pop up with goals every season and it makes you wonder why we ever got rid of him?”

Wolves fans should back Matt Doherty move

The raised eyebrows around this proposed move are understandable.

It is certainly interesting that Wolves are moving to bring back a player who was so good in a system that is no longer used regularly.

But Bull goes on to say in his column that he at least gives Wolves the option to move to a wing-backs system.

We’ve seen Julen Lopetegui go to a back three with wing-backs in games on occasion.

The Spaniard appears to believe in the player and so, this move should be backed.
