Daniel Podence reveals the real reason he left Wolves in the summer

Daniel Podence finally left Wolves in the summer after months of speculation surrounding his future.

The Portuguese international had been on loan to Olympiacos in the 2023/24 campaign where he helped the Greek side win the Europa Conference League.

Despite both parties wanting to reunite in the summer, Gary O’Neil made it clear that he wanted Podence to stay

As a result, the winger was part of pre-season and made an opening-day appearance away to Arsenal.

However, in early September, Podence departed for Saudi side Al-Shabab ending his stay at Wolves once and for all.

Now, the 28-year-old has confirmed why he chose to move on from the Old Gold this season.

Wolves project ‘didn’t suit’ Daniel Podence

It is clear that Podence still has the ability to be a top footballer. The winger was instrumental to Olympiacos winning the Europa Conference League and Podence got multiple assists vs Aston Villa in the semis.

Therefore, for some, it may seem a bit baffling that the Portuguese international decided to ditch Wolves to play in the Middle East.

However, speaking to A Bola, Podence plainly explains that the Wolves project wasn’t for him.

“I think that out of all the options I had and because of what I did last year, winning a European competition was something that I was unintentionally looking for,” he said.

“And once I’d achieved it, I felt there wasn’t much left to do in Europe, as I’d already been in the Premier League for a while and had already experienced a lot.

“Coming to Saudi Arabia at this time, with the growth that is taking place, I felt it was a very good step for my career.”

“I had Wolverhampton, but I felt it wasn’t a project that suited me at the moment. This was a very important step. I like challenges, I felt this was a very big challenge for me and I had to accept it.”

Carlos Forbs has the potential to be better than Daniel Podence

While Wolves fans have not seen much of new signing Carlos Forbs, there is no doubt that he has potential.

The winger was sensational in Man City’s academy and has already had bright cameos from the bench.

With Podence now 28 years old, it was best for both parties for him to part ways as a younger player in Forbs came through.

Hopefully, before the international break, the Molineux faithful can see more of their new signing in action.
