‘Class player who went off the boil’: Steve Bull gives honest verdict on 27-year-old Wolves man

Molineux legend Steve Bull believes Wolves were right to offload Daniel Podence.

The winger was the final outgoing of the summer at Molineux.

He left the club to join Olympiacos on loan, with the player extending his contract at Wolves beforehand.

Wanderers wanted to protect his value, since he only had a year left. Podence’s new contract takes him to the summer of 2025, and there is apparently an option for a further 12 months.

Podence had wanted to leave Wolves, and had not been a part of the squad in pre-season amid the speculation about his future.

Gary O’Neil said recently that Podence did not really share in Wolves’ goals.

After some speculation about a potential move to Saudi Arabia, the loan move to Olympiacos was facilitated – and Bull believes that was for the best…

However, this was before things started coming out about him being unhappy and wanting out.

Bull now believes that Wolves facilitating Podence’s exit was the right decision.

He said (Express & Star): “Players come and go and it was the right time for Daniel Podence to depart. There was a bit of unrest, he wanted to play football and if they’re not going to use him, you might as well let him go play somewhere else.

“If it’s best for both parties, then fair play. He’s a very talented player but he doesn’t fit in at Wolves now. He’s a class player who went off the boil.”

Daniel Podence had to go

As much as Wolves could have done with him in the squad, there was no way he could have stuck around.

Once O’Neil suggested publicly that Podence and Wolves were not on the same wavelength, then it was clear he could not stay.

We all know Podence is a talented player on his day.

But he lacks consistency and has the potential to really frustrate.

Had he stuck around and continued to be inconsistent, he likely would have had people on his back.

Ideally Wolves would have sold, but at least the club were able to extend his contract and protect his value.
