Champions League club await Gary O’Neil US pre-season decision as they target ‘class’ Wolves gem

Gary O’Neil has a crucial call to make on one Wolves player’s future in the coming weeks, as the squad prepare for their pre-season tour of the United States.

The summer transfer window is well underway and Wolves have got to work at strengthening their squad ahead of the upcoming season.

Gary O’Neil made it clear last term that he wanted to add some new additions to bolster the depth of his side, which he has done with four new signings.

While the captures of Tommy Doyle, Pedro Lima, Jorgen Strand Larsen and Rodrigo Gomes are encouraging, the manager will be eager to also retain the majority of his squad.

Sporting CP wary of Wolves movements with transfer target Chiquinho

It’s no secret that Wolves are facing a battle to keep Chiquinho heading into the 2024/25 season.

The winger spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Famalicao, where he impressed in Liga Portugal, leading to Sporting CP’s admiration for the 24-year-old.

While Sporting are aware of O’Neil’s desire to properly assess the forward in pre-season before making a decision on his future, the Portuguese giants are becoming concerned over Chiquinho’s involvement in pre-season.

In a report from Record, it’s relayed that Sporting are ‘waiting with anticipation’ to see if Chiquinho will be named in the squad in the club’s tour of the United States.

The winger featured against Como and Bristol City in Wolves’ opening pre-season friendlies, with his future in the hands of O’Neil.

There is still every chance that Chiquinho could stay at Wolves

While Sporting CP were impressed with what they saw from Chiquinho last season, the Champions League side are well aware that Wolves have the power.

Record’s report maintained the narrative that Ruben Amorim’s side are powerless as O’Neil is yet to make a final decision on the £8.5m player’s future.

There is still every chance that Chiquinho could be a Wolves player next campaign, as he has already impressed in pre-season training in front of O’Neil, where he was called “absolute class” by journalist Nathan Judah.

Wolves’ activity in the United States will be something to keep track of, not only for the club with the power over the winger but for Sporting CP also, who are watching like a hawk this summer.
