Champions League-chasing club already looking to sign £27.5m Wolves player in January

The January transfer window is now less than two months away, and it will be a chance for Gary O’Neil to make changes to his Wolves squad.

It is expected the club will be busy, having had a poor start to the new season.

Wolves got their first win of the season on Saturday against Southampton. But they are still languishing down in 19th place.

Wolves fans are expecting to see a new centre-back arrive, which is something that should undoubtedly have happened in the last window.

But there could also be some player outgoings.

Speculation continues over Jose Sa’s future, although he has forced his way back into the starting XI now and may be less likely to go.

But one player who might be on his way is Goncalo Guedes.

It has been reported by Relevo that Villarreal are already eyeing a January transfer move for Goncalo Guedes.

The Yellow Submarine want to strengthen their attack in the next window, and are keen to move for a player they took on loan last season.

£27.5 million signing Guedes made 19 appearances for the club during the second half of last season, scoring three goals and making three assists.

Villarreal finds themselves in a great position after 12 rounds of fixtures in La Liga. Under Marcelino, they have risen to fourth in the table, and have hopes of securing Champions League football for next season.

It is stated that Guedes is very much to the liking of their coaching staff and directors.

Also, the positive relationship between Marcelino and Guedes is suggested as something which be decisive in January.

Villarreal have had some trouble keeping their attackers fit this season despite their positive start, with the likes Gerard Moreno and Ayoze Perez both having physical problems.

Guedes could seek to leave Wolves

It would be no real surprise if Guedes sought to try and leave Wolves in the next window.

For many, it is a surprise that he actually stuck around beyond the last window, given there was plenty of speculation he would be leaving. It was claimed Guedes might have left Wolves on transfer deadline day, but he ended up staying.

Guedes deserves some credit for the way he has gone about things since the summer, and has looked lively when called upon. That said, Lee Naylor criticised Guedes’ ‘schoolboy’ defending recently against Palace.

Appearances – 10

Goals – 3
Assists – 1

But he has only made two starts this season. O’Neil has surprisingly given Guedes just two starts for Wolves in the Premier League, which has been questionable given Wolves’ form and the fact that Guedes has scored three goals in the Carabao Cup.

With Villarreal having had him last season, it would be no surprise to see an approach from them in January.

However, Gary O’Neil will remember how injuries stung Wolves in the second half of last season. So a loan exit may be off the cards and it would then be a case of Villarreal meeting Wolves’ asking price, which is currently unknown.
