Celtic make fresh attempt to sign Wolves player Julen Lopetegui loved

Celtic are reportedly making a renewed attempt to sign a player from Wolves after they failed to land him in January.

Max Kilman is the only player to have departed Molineux so far this summer.

The defender joined West Ham United in a £40 million deal a few weeks back, but no others have followed him out the door yet.

That has been something of a surprise.

There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Pedro Neto, with Liverpool having now made contact over the winger. Rayan Ait-Nouri could also be someone who leaves, although he is less likely to go than Neto.

One player who may also depart if the price is right is Hugo Bueno – and Celtic are now reigniting their interest in the Spaniard.

It has been reported today by BBC Sport that Celtic have made a renewed attempt to sign Hugo Bueno this summer.

The Scottish giants reportedly enquired about Bueno last January. But Wolves were unwilling to lose the player mid-season.

Wolves and Celtic are said to be in talks at the moment. But currently, there is no agreement.

It is stated that Celtic – who’ll play in next season’s Champions League – are after signing Bueno on loan for the 2024/25 campaign.

But the player has made some quotes to suggest that he would be happy to stay at Wolves. He said: “Last season we started with a back four and I felt really comfortable, then we changed to a back five and sometimes you have to adapt quickly.

“Hopefully in this new season, with more time with the coaches, I can get more information on the things that they want.

“I’m really happy and motivated about the new season and let’s see what happens.”

Bueno leaving seems unlikely

Celtic are clearly big admirers of Bueno, since they tried to get him in January and are now looking to land him again.

Seemingly they sense that he could be available, given the fact Ait-Nouri is first-choice at Wolves now.

But Bueno’s latest interview does suggest that he is happy to stay and fight for his place at Molineux. So potentially, Wolves may be unwilling to do business here unless Celtic would be willing to buy the player rather than loan him.

A loan doesn’t really do anything for Wolves, unless a tasty obligation to buy clause is agreed.

The club should be looking to hold onto him, because he showed in his breakthrough season what a fine young player he is, and he is great cover and competition for Ait-Nouri.

Julen Lopetegui certainly admired him a lot, playing him much more than Ait-Nouri during his time as head coach at Molineux. Lopetegui also branded Bueno ‘very professional’.
