Celta Vigo director issues new Fer Lopez charm offensive amid improvement at Wolves

Fer Lopez will be one to watch in January, and the sporting director of Celta Vigo has again spoken about the Spaniard.

Wolves are going to be particularly busy in the next transfer window, with it looking like the club will need to prepare for Championship life next year.

Currently, Wolves are 14 points adrift of safety.

While there are still a lot of points to play for, it is going to take a monumental effort for Wolves to get out of this mess.

And by the time January rolls around, the gap could well be bigger.

Either way though, the squad will likely be looking very different by the end of the window, and it remains to be seen if Fer Lopez will still be in it.

Lopez has been the subject of interest from Celta Vigo in recent weeks – and now their sporting director has again spoken about the Wolves youngster.

Celta are keen to re-sign Lopez on loan, but there have been some hurdles.

The biggest is that currently there is no space for him in their squad, so they will have to make room by offloading other players.

It has also been suggested that Lopez’s wages could be an issue. But it has been claimed Lopez would be willing to take an economic sacrifice to bring a move to fruition.

Interestingly though, Lopez’s situation at Wolves has slightly changed recently.

After coming back from a minor injury, he’s now come off the bench in the last two matches, and caught the eye.

Wolves have reportedly been lining Lopez up for a loan move, but it’s not out of the question Edwards could try and keep hold of him. Especially given the injuries to Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

Amid Lopez seeing a bit more involvement for Wolves, Celta sporting director Marco Garcés has gone on a new charm offensive, insisting the youngster is ‘exactly’ the kind of player he wants.

He said (via AS): “We would love for him to return. He’s exactly the type of player we need. We’ve expressed our interest, but it seems difficult. They invested a significant amount of money, and it was very recently.

“We have all 25 squad spots filled. If we can offload a couple of players, someone with Fer López’s profile, whether it’s him or another player, would be very interesting.”

Lopez loan exit not a foregone conclusion

A few weeks ago it was looking like there would be no chance of Lopez staying at Wolves beyond January, amid reports the club were looking to send him out on loan.

But Edwards has turned to him a couple of times off the bench now, and the injury problems are mounting.

There was real hype when Fer Lopez first signed for Wolves

“I have seen some of the best players in the world play football. I have never seen a footballer like him. He was literally incredible. From the first day, I knew he was going to be a superstar.”

Garces clearly wants to bring him back. But it feels like there’s a better chance of him sticking around compared to a few weeks ago.

Journalist Liam Keen suggested on the latest E&S podcast that it is ‘possible’ Wolves and Edwards could change their stance on Lopez in the coming weeks and keep him around.

We’ll have to wait and see, but fans have been vocal about Lopez staying, and it would be great to see him actually turn things around rather than be farmed out at the earliest opportunity.
