Blow for Vitor Pereira as Manchester City now lead transfer race for ‘powerful’ £30m Wolves target

Wolves are ready to bring in defensive recruits in the January transfer window.

It has been a season of struggle at the back for Wolves, who have conceded a whopping 45 goals in 20 Premier League games.

Wolves have been all over the shop at times, and are really crying out for new additions.

Emmanuel Agbadou will sign for Wolves after a fee was agreed with Reims. The player underwent his medical in France, having been waiting on a work permit.

But at least one other defender is expected to follow.

Kevin Danson remains linked with Wolves, but he is not the only player of interest from Lens.

In December, it was claimed Adbukodir Khusanov was offered to Wolves and several other clubs by Jorge Mendes. But it looks like he could now be bound for Manchester City.

Wolves are thought to want to hand Vitor Pereira two new defensive recruits in this window.

But it looks as though Khusanov will not be following Agbadou to Molineux as the second new defender.

Because journalist Ben Jacobs has reported this afternoon on X that the Lens player is now on course to join Premier League champions Manchester City.

He said: “Manchester City are now advancing on a deal for Abdukodir Khusanov. 20-year-old centre-back is on the radar of several clubs, including Newcastle and Spurs.

“#MCFC currently ahead of their Premier League rivals and willing to meet Len’s asking price, which is over £30m.”

City have not had a good season and are currently down in sixth place and 12 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Like Wolves, they have struggled defensively this term, and managed to keep just four clean sheets in the Premier League – which is only one more than Wanderers.

Wolves signing Khusanov was always going to be a tall order

So it looks as though Khusanov could be on his way to the Etihad Stadium this month.

He also had interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur according to Give Me Sport, so it was always going to be difficult to land him.

And seemingly, Khusanov – who’s been branded ‘powerful’ by Lens manager Will Still – is going to transfer for a fee of over £30 million, which suggests Wolves just wouldn’t have been able to compete.

Historically, Wolves just haven’t spent that kind of money on players in January transfer windows.

It will be interesting to see how he gets on if Khusanov does go to City, and hopefully Wolves have alternative targets they are working on.

Renato Veiga has been linked with Wolves and could be a smart option for Pereira.
