Bid ‘instantly’ rejected for Wolves starlet who impressed Gary O’Neil in pre-season

August could prove to be a busy month for Wolves in the transfer market as the start of the Premier League season looms.

The club have now brought in a significant amount of cash after Max Kilman and Pedro Neto both departed for big fees

Gary O’Neil has suggested this week will be a ‘big one’ for Wolves in the transfer market. However, as of yet, no new signings have been announced.

On the departure front, there are still plenty of clubs who are interested in Wolves’ players.

Now, another youngster could be set to leave this window after Stoke upped their interest in Luke Cundle.

The Wolves academy graduate has spent the last two seasons out on loan in the Championship developing his skills.

After a successful loan spell at Swansea City in the 2022/23 campaign, he then had a short spell at newly promoted Plymouth in the following season.

Here, he became one of their best players which resulted in Stoke taking over his loan until the end of the 2023/24 campaign in January.

While his spell wasn’t as successful, it hasn’t stopped the Potters from pursuing a permanent move for the midfielder.

According to Liam Keen, Stoke had a £500k bid for Cundle ‘instantly’ rejected on Tuesday.

Wolves value the 22-year-old at £4 million with the opening bid falling well below their valuation.

There were suggestions last week that Cundle could end up staying at Wolves after he impressed O’Neil during pre-season.

Speaking about the midfielder last week, Keen said: “As far as I’m aware, Stoke are open and willing to have him back.

“But it’s a slightly different situation with Cundle than it was previously in that, he’s actually done quite well in pre-season. I think Gary has been quite pleased with him.

“He’s played well in the games he’s played in as well. It’s definitely not impossible that he ends up staying around the team at the moment.”

“Cundle, there’s a chance he could stay now based on the way pre-season has gone for him. If he does move, it will probably be a bit later in the window once Wolves have got an idea of where their squad is going to be. One to keep an eye on, he’s done well in pre-season and given himself a chance.”

Could Luke Cundle play a part in Wolves’ upcoming season?

Wolves already have plenty of midfielders at their disposal for the new campaign. However, there are suggestions that Cundle could play a part.

The youngster could prove to be a creative back-up, similar to how Boubacar Traore is the defensive option on the bench.

Cundle also has Premier League experience after earning a handful of caps in the 2021/22 campaign.

The best indication of the 22-year-old’s role in the upcoming season may come in the Carabao Cup second round later this month. If he earns a start, it may show that O’Neil plans to keep the youngster around.
