Another star player looks set to stay at Wolves after months of speculation

Wolves have received a massive boost in their hopes of keeping Yerson Mosquera this summer.

One of the biggest questions the Molineux faithful have going into the 2024/25 campaign is how the backline is going to cope.

Wolves’ defence in 2024 was very weak which contributed to the club’s collapse in form at the end of the Premier League season.

Yet, this summer, Gary O’Neil is yet to purchase a new defender. Instead, Wolves have departed with their captain Max Kilman, arguably making the club weaker in this area.

However, one potential shining light is Mosquera. The Colombian has returned from a successful loan spell at Villarreal and has shone in pre-season.

Yet, his future at Wolves was highly speculated with Villarreal eyeing a permanent move for the centre-back.

Now, the Spanish side’s stance on the defender has been revealed as the transfer window heats up.

For weeks it has been reported that Villarreal wanted to see the return of Mosquera. The 23-year-old was one of the key components in their rise up the table in 2024.

Only last week, it was believed that Villarreal were preparing an opening bid for the centre-back in an attempt to sway him back to Spain.

However, according to Onda Cero, they have now ‘given up’ on their pursuit of Mosquera. The report states that Villarreal feels that signing a new defender is vital but purchasing the Wolves man has been ‘almost ruled out’.

O’Neil is believed to be ‘counting’ on the centre-back ahead of the season which has resulted in the end of the saga.

Holding onto Mosquera was arguably one of the biggest O’Neil‘s biggest challenges this summer.

Over the past 18 months, the defender has progressed on the pitch magnificently. He has become an international player for Colombia and earned plaudits in La Liga.

The 23-year-old is still young and has plenty of room to progress over the next few years.

If his trajectory stays on course, Mosquera could be one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the coming years.
