Former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards has thrown his backing behind the club’s imminent move for Matt Doherty.
Wanderers are on the verge of bringing the Republic of Ireland international back to Molineux, three years after he left.
Wolves are swooping for the player on a free transfer.
Doherty has had a rocky past few years.
He struggled to make a success of his move to Tottenham Hotspur.
And he only made two appearances for Atletico Madrid after joining them in January of this year. He left as a free agent at the end of the season.
He’s now set to move back to the club he made his name at – and in the eyes of Edwards, it’s a smart play by the club.
Dave Edwards backs Wolves move for Matt Doherty
Wolves moving to bring Doherty back to Molineux hasn’t gone done well with everyone.
But many have suggested it could be a shrewd move by Wanderers and Edwards, like Steve Bull, does think it’s a good idea.

Writing in his latest Express & Star column, he said: “Matt Doherty coming back to Wolves would be an absolute no-brainer for me. I know him really well and having played with him and seeing what a great job he did in the last three of four years at the club it makes complete sense.
“He will be available on a free, just wages for them to sort out but I really do think Wolves lack a few leaders in that dressing room and with him knowing the club really well I think he will be a very important person to have in that dressing room.
“When you look at what he offers on the pitch Wolves struggled last year in those full-back positions and he will compete with the other players there.
“He gives them something completely different in that position with the goals he can score and the unpredictability he brings. For me, this deal has so much upside for it.”
Doherty needs to give Nelson Semedo a push
Assuming this now gets done, Doherty needs to come in and really give Nelson Semedo a push.
Semedo has been a decent signing for Wanderers. But for a lot of supporters, he probably still hasn’t quite justified his price tag.
It can be argued, though, that the Portugal international hasn’t really had a strong challenge for his position since he came to the club.

He arrived at Molineux at the same time as Ki-Jana Hoever. The Dutchman was always firmly behind Semedo in the pecking order.
And then in recent times Jonny Castro Otto has been the second-choice right-back. Sadly, the Spaniard looks a shadow of the player he was in his early days at Molineux.
Doherty will be coming in hungry to prove himself again. And hopefully this will have a positive effect on Semedo.
