Matt Doherty will become a Wolves player again, barring any unexpected issues.
Wolves have been quiet in the window so far – certainly on the incomings front.
But it looks as though Wanderers will confirm their first signing very soon in the form of 31-year-old Doherty.
Doherty left Wolves three years ago to join Tottenham Hotspur for just under £15 million.
He had an up and down spell there, and left the club in January of this year. He joined Atletico Madrid where he played two games, before becoming a free agent this summer.
And it looks as though he’s ready to come back to Molineux to try and get going again.
Wolves to sign Matt Doherty
Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath reports this afternoon that Doherty is all set to be Wolves’ first signing of the summer.
He wrote: “Matt Doherty to #Wolves has been agreed on all sides. The 31yr-old at Atletico Madrid and #Spurs last season and moves as a free agent. Left Molineux in 2020 and now returns.”
There is no word yet on the length of contract Doherty will sign. One would imagine it will be for two years.
The claim from McGrath follows Fabrizio Romano reporting that the talks were in the final stages.
Matt Doherty is a good signing for the Wolves squad
At first, Wolves going in for Doherty felt a bit underwhelming. And also a little confusing considering Wolves no longer play with wing-backs from the start of games, which is Doherty’s best position.
But Doherty is coming in on a free, and he has a lot of experience under his belt.

He has an understanding of the club, and he will be another leader in the dressing room.
Doherty will be hungry to turn his career around. It didn’t work out for him at Tottenham and Atleti, but he obviously made his name at Molineux and will be hopeful of a second wind.
Julen Lopetegui has given it the green light, and his judgement should be trusted.
