Matheus Cunha’s name hasn’t strayed too far away from the headlines since news broke that contract talks with Wolves had stalled.
The star forward looked all-but set to put pen to paper on an extension a few short weeks ago after reaching a verbal agreement with Wolves, but stopped short of putting pen to paper due to the club not wanting to attach a Premier League relegation release clause to the deal.
Cunha’s attitude to playing for the Old Gold notably changed on Monday evening as a result. Fans were furious with Cunha for the supposed lack of effort he showed in the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while manager Vitor Pereira called out his star player for poor ‘body language’ during his post-match press conference too.
Thanks to this, interest in Cunha’s services has notably increased over the last few days. No fewer than six Premier League clubs have now been linked with a move for his services, and a latest report suggests there’s now a surprise frontrunner for the forward’s signature.
Nottingham Forest preparing ‘club-record bid’ to sign Wolves star Matheus Cunha this January
That surprise frontrunner is high-flying Nottingham Forest. According to Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol, Forest are readying what would be a ‘club record bid’ to lure Cunha to the City Ground during the January transfer window.
While the exact figure isn’t specified, that would mean Forest would be readying a bid worth more than the £35m they spent on Elliot Anderson during the 2024 summer transfer window.
The report further states that Wolves would be tempted by an offer of around £60m for Cunha – a figure that would trump the club’s previous record sale of Matheus Nunes to Manchester City for £53m in 2023.
Player | Fee | To |
Matheus Nunes | £53m | Man City |
Pedro Neto | £51.3m | Chelsea |
Ruben Neves | £47m | Al Hilal |
Max Kilman | £40m | West Ham |
Diogo Jota | £40m | Liverpool |
Nottingham Forest and Arsenal among Premier League clubs interested in Cunha
While Forest look to be one of the frontrunners, they are by no means the only Premier League club interested in Wolves’ star man. Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea, Tottenham and, most recently, Newcastle United have all been credited with an interest too.

Reports which emerged stating that Cunha had ‘agreed personal terms’ with Arsenal were quickly shot down by Ben Jacobs on Wednesday evening, but the Gunners are still said to be ‘in touch with Cunha’s camp’ about a potential move to the Emirates Stadium.
The forward would, of course, be a gigantic loss to Wolves if he were to leave this January. Cunha has been the club’s star player throughout a difficult 2024/25 campaign, scoring 10 goals and bagging four assists in 21 Premier League appearances.
