Wolves and Sunderland’s bizarre last meeting ended in heartbreak and jubilation

With the international break finally at an end, it’s back to Premier League action against Sunderland at the weekend.

Saturday’s clash is a must-win for Vitor Pereira in order to maintain the pre-break momentum that has been building and avoid relegation chatter from taking over again.

It’s a first meeting between the sides in over seven years, and the last time they faced off was a uniquely emotional affair.

The game ended in a Wolves defeat, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

Wolves didn’t show up against Sunderland

In the final game of the Championship in 2018, Wolves had already secured the title and will have seen this tie as a victory lap.

But it was the home side who came out swinging, and held a 2-0 lead over the Old Gold at the break.

Sunderland would kill the tie in the second half, scoring a third just past the hour mark.

A disappointing end to the campaign for Wolves, but not one they dwelled on for too long.

You wouldn’t know it by what happened at full-time

When the final whistle blew, the mood in the Stadium of Light was not what you would expect of a 3-0 home win.

That’s because this performance from Sunderland was a rarity. For most of the season they were woeful, and they sat dead last in the standings, bound for League One.

Wolves on the other hand, dominated the second-tier for most of the season, winning the title with 99 points.

As such, it was the losers who were elated at the final whistle.

The bitter pill to swallow is that Wolves were one point away from becoming the sixth centurions in the history of the Championship. But they won’t mind too much, especially considering the fact that they have managed to stay in the Premier League ever since.
