The 2004 Wolves vs Manchester United fixture that offers Rob Edwards hope of an upset

Beating Manchester United on Monday will not be easy, but there are precedents that show Wolves could cause an upset.

This season is currently on a knife’s edge, and the Old Gold are looking for a miracle.

The Red Devils are by far favourites, as they are battling for European places, and the Wanderers are fighting a losing battle in their quest to stay in the Premier League.

The current season has entered December, and Wolves have yet to win a game in the league.

Pundits predict Man United to beat Wolves, but they are not convinced about it 👀 Are they right?

“Wolves can’t score goals; they can’t pick up any points. Man United don’t give me any hope though. But I think because of this poor run that Wolves are in, I am going to have to say a United win, but I’m not convinced.”

Alan Shearer

“I am backing [Man United] to win – but I wouldn’t actually be that surprised if they went to Molineux and ended up getting another 1-1 draw.

Wolves haven’t even managed a goal, let alone a point, for five games, which probably means they are due to score, but I am going with United to keep a clean sheet too.”

Pundits have begun writing off Wolves’ chances, but 21 years ago, an Old Gold side that looked destined for relegation gave themselves an outside chance of survival.

They stunned Sir Alex Ferguson’s Premier League leaders in what was a famous day at Molineux.

Relegation-bound Wolves beat champions Manchester United in 2004

In 2004, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United were leading the Premier League table when they faced Wolves at Molineux in mid-January.

The expectation was that the Red Devils would secure a routine three points. At this point, Wolves were 19th in the Premier League table after getting promoted that season.

It was also Denis Irwin’s second time playing against his former club, after the reverse fixture ended in a 1-0 win for Manchester United.

However, this game would be different. A goal from Kenny Miller in the 66th minute shocked the Premier League as Wolves beat United 1-0 at Molineux.

And an Old Gold side that looked destined for relegation had picked up a huge three points against the current English champions and league leaders.

Not to say it was Wolves’ doing, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s side would then fall out of the title race in the weeks after.

Following the loss to Wolves, Manchester United would win just seven out of their remaining 16 matches, including five losses.

The season ended with Arsenal as champions, and unfortunately for the Wanderers, this shock result did not change their fortunes as they finished rock-bottom.

Rob Edwards will need to inspire a similar performance

There are a lot of similarities to the current situation ahead of the match on Monday night.

While Manchester United are not as good as that Alex Ferguson side back then, this Wolves side is likely worse than 2003/2004.

The Old Gold were relegated, but they finished just six points off safety, and as things stand, they would probably snap your hand off to be in a similar position come the end of the season.

STAT: Wolves have not registered a Premier League goal in 9 hours and 6 minutes of football. This includes added time at HT and FT. Marshall Munetsi’s strike against Burnley in October was the last league goal for the Old Gold.

Rob Edwards will have to motivate his players and get them to believe a win is possible. History shows Wolves can do it, and Manchester United’s inability to keep clean sheets certainly helps.

It will be a tough fixture, but anything can happen in football.
