Throwbacks

Six years ago, Wolves were on the right side of late drama unlike recent Premier League collapses

Wolves have recently conceded two late goals that have resulted in the Old Gold dropping four points.

Joao Palhinha’s 96th-minute strike was followed by Jan Paul van Hecke’s 86th-minute equaliser in back-to-back 1-1 draws against Tottenham and Brighton.

The late goals have compounded Wolves’ struggles this season, and the Wanderers are left last in the Premier League on just two points.

Vitor Pereira has received criticism for his decision-making, and the mood at Molineux is starting to dampen even more.

The last-minute heartbreaks have been tough to take, but a moment in 2019 is fondly remembered, as Wolves were the ones causing the heartbreak on that occasion.

Adama Traore scored two late goals against Manchester City in a 2-0 win

On October 6th, 2019, Adama Traore sent the Old Gold faithful wild with a brace against then-current Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad stadium.

It was a shock result, with the Wanderers the heavy underdogs going into the match, and few would have predicted such an outcome.

However, the performance of Traore was exceptional, and his goals in the 80th and 94th minutes sent the travelling pack home with all three points.

The first goal came from tremendous work from Raul Jimenez, who dribbled past Nicolas Otamendi before squaring it to the former Wolves winger, who slotted it into the corner.

The second showcased the famous blistering pace that Adama possesses. He made a run from within his own half to get onto the end of another Jimenez pass to seal the win with another good finish.

The Spanish winger took both of his strikes well, and the three points were important in a season where Wolves seemed to be riding a wave of momentum.

Under Nuno Espirito Santo, the club finished in 7th place that season, their highest ever placement in the Premier League.

Wolves need someone to step up like Adama Traore did

At the moment Wolves need a big result. They need someone like Adama Traore who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and turn it into a positive outcome.

Jorgen Strand Larsen could be that player but the Norwegian has yet to hit full fitness after a recent Achilles’ issue.

Recent performances against Tottenham and Brighton have improved compared to the opening five games, but when fighting relegation, only results matter.

Hopefully someone can step up soon and provide the Old Gold with another famous victory in England’s top division.
